LYNN — The 2-man team of Paul Gorman and Faton Smrqaku emerged as victors in the annual Gannon Golf Course Silver Classic Sunday, but the men had to work overtime to do it.
“This is the biggest tournament of the year, besides the Club Championship,” said Inner Club president Bob Cross.
The tournament is a 2-man best ball over the course of two days.
By the end of regulation play Sunday, three teams were tied atminus-17, with net scores of 123.
Besides Gorman-Smrqaku, the other two teams were Jerry Worthylake-Matt Civiello and Tim Calvani-Joe Ottariano.
A 2-hole playoff ensued, beginning on the 18th. With the deck crowded and watching, all three halved the 18th to move onto a second hole — the first. And that’s where it ended.
Several players had difficulty all weekend with the first hole, a par-4 with a dogleg turn. However, Smrqaku was able to chip a third shot to five feet and drain the putt for 4 net 3 and for the win.
“Thanks to all the players in the field of 136,” said Cross, “and thanks to our pro Dave Sibley, his staff, and our new head groundskeeper, Pat Manning, for the great setup of the course. It was amazing!
