Life is anything but ruff: The Red Dog Pet Resort & Spa is coming to Saugus

SAUGUS — A resort and spa where pooches can kick up their paws is slated to open its doggy doors this fall.

A North Shore branch of the Red Dog Pet Resort & Spa, which has a location in Boston, is on track to open just off Route 1 by October, said president Eric Schneider.

The pet resort will soon offer doggy daycare, overnight boarding, grooming, and training services. It will feature three indoor play spaces and two outdoor spaces. It’s big enough to house up to 150 dogs and 25 cats.

Dozens of luxury suites with flat screen TVs to view Animal Planet, and several with an outdoor space, are nearing completion, Schneider said.

“We’re moving along,” he said. “Our goal is fall. All the cages are coming in —  everything will be glass, there will be no bars or anything that looks like a kennel. They will be 5 x 5 traditional rooms with all glass. A gate can pop open and they can go in and out as they please to go to the bathroom.”

Schneider said the entire building is enclosed, including the rooftop. It will be staffed 24 hours a day, and 60 surveillance cameras will be installed to ensure safety of the animals.

During construction, the decision was made not to include a full-sized swimming pool. Clients seeking aquatics and hydro-fitness sessions, which are supervised and directed by a fitness practitioner, and other pool-related services, can visit the Boston location, Schneider said.

Owners can sign animals up for fun swim, hydro-massage swim, or fitness swim classes. The massage and swim start at $30 at the Boston location.

The Saugus resort will offer daycare and overnight boarding, as well as elaborate grooming and other spa services. Baths for dogs at the Boston shop start at $30 and range to more than $50 for larger pups. Dog haircuts cost between $55 and $75. Need to de-skunk your pet? That’s $12. A nail cut will cost $12 and nail polish is $10.

There will be an option to purchase additional services either a la carte or as package deals. These services include things like bedtime tuck-ins with a bedtime story, teeth brushing with a Greenie, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich midday snack, ice cream breaks or a plush bedding upgrade.
It works in collaboration with Wag Pet Service to offer small animal massage and has partnered with Argos Dog Training to offer training services.

Schneider said the company is in the process of hiring animal lovers to work as employees at the resort’s newest location.
