MEDFORD — Dick’s Sporting Goods is officially coming to Medford next week, one of seven new stores the American sporting goods giant is launching this month.

The new Dick’s Sporting Goods will be open on Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 13-14 for two “preview days” before its three-day grand opening on the weekend of Sept. 15-17.

And Dick’s isn’t the only big chain coming to the city: Wegmans Food Markets has announced its official grand opening will be on Sunday, Nov. 5. It is poised to become Medford largest single-site employer.

Wegmans will eventually employ some 450 people at the megastore and is now hiring and training for 250 part-time positions at the site of the former Meadow Glen mall at 3950 Mystic Valley Parkway and Locust Street. Local residents have priority preference hiring.

Dick’s will be the first of three major new chain openings at the former Meadow Glen Mall, located at 3850 Mystic Valley Parkway at Locust Street in Medford. Wegman’s will follow and Petco, another national chain, is scheduled to open before the end of the year.

The three new stores have already targeted local residents for hiring preference. Petco is expected to provide 30-40 part-time and full-time jobs while Dick’s is planning on hiring 75-100 employees and Wegmans more than 400 part-time and full-time workers

Jayson Tatum from the Boston Celtics will join the grand opening celebration for Medford, which will also feature weekend giveaways of merchandise and gift cards. The first 100 adults in line on the the first day of the grand opening on Friday, Sept. 15 will receive mystery prize cards which could be a $500 gift card.

There are also fun in-store games of skill and agility planned for children and teens during the grand opening celebration.

All told, the 610-store chain, second only to Walmart for total annual revenue from sporting goods and apparel sales nationally, is opening 43 new stores in 2017, one of its highest growth years on record.

The Medford Wegmans is a 120,000 square-foot supermarket that includes a Market Café with indoor and outdoor seating and The Burger Bar, a family-friendly, casual restaurant counter that serves delicious burgers, fresh salads, flavorful sandwiches, specialty milkshakes, soups, and sides. This store will be Wegmans’ fifth location in New England since opening in Northborough in 2011. Another new location is slated to open in Natick in 2018.

Part-time positions are available in all departments.  There are a significant number of culinary positions, such as cooks and front of house. Select full-time openings remain for prepared foods, deli, produce, and overnight grocery operations.

Applicants may apply online at www.wegmans.com/careers or call 781-322-0985 for more information.
