School Roundup: Tanners roll in straight sets

The Peabody Tanners volleyball team opened up their 2017 season on Wednesday with a 3-0 shutout win over Salem, winning with set scores of 25-10, 25-12 and 25-20. Rachel Coleman led the way with 13 assists, and Martyna Kot contributed six aces and four kills. Ann Manning had five kills, while Serena Laro played a great game on both offense and defense.

Peabody (1-0) will host Danvers at Higgins Middle School on Friday afternoon.

Somerville 3, Lynn English 0

English fell in straight sets on Wednesday, 7-25, 13-25, 16-25. Senior transfer student Sarah Abdelrahman had a solid game with seven hits and one kills, while junior captain Andy Nhiv contributed three saves. Sophomore Ashley Dahlbeck, who made her varsity debut, also played well in the loss.

Marblehead 3, Beverly 0

Despite the shutout score, it was a close match for the Magicians in their season opener on Wednesday. Marblehead got the win with set scores of 28-26, 28-26 and 25-16. Lizzie Myers was the offensive standout on the night, finishing with 10 kills. Katie Knight had six kills, while Isabel Curtin and Isabel Castineyra combined for 16 assists from the setter position. Many Dumais had a great defensive game with 10 digs.

The Magicians (1-0) will take on Lynn Classical on Friday afternoon.

Medford 3, Lynn Classical 1

The Rams fought hard in a season-opening loss on Wednesday, falling by set scores of 19-25, 25-19, 10-25 and 20-25. Alytah Noun led the way with eight service points, while Emily Silva added seven service points. Shanelle Barry had five kills to lead the offense while Maggie McHale had a solid all-around game with four kills, four assists and one block. Pamela Diaz contributed five digs, Yaritza Zorrilla had four digs and Silva, Rhode Alcindor and Janesca Fernandez had three digs each.

Classical (0-1) will host Marblehead on Friday.
