School Roundup: Spartans volleyball starts with a win

The St. Mary’s volleyball team got the 2017 season started on a positive note. The Spartans kicked off their season with a win in five sets, 25-17, 22-25, 21-25, 25-19 and 15-9. Grace Fleming and Jennie Iudice, both juniors, combined for 22 service points. Sophomore Courtney Kostopolous had seven digs and four kills in the winning effort. St. Mary’s is 1-0 on the young season.

Swampscott 3, Malden 0
The Big Blue open their new season with an impressive win. The set scores were 25-23, 25-12 and 27-25 all in Swampscott’s favor. Sophomore setter Cassidy Ryan delivered seven service aces and nine assists. Junior middle blocker Alexa Winter had four blocks to help out in the win. Swampscott has a quick turnaround with a match today at Winthrop.

GIRLS SOCCER

Swampscott 4, Shawsheen 1
At Shawsheen, Swampscott’s offense led the way in the win. Haley Bernhardt scored two goals, as did Mackenzie Kearney. Monique Kazelyan scored Shawsheen’s lone goal of the afternoon in the 79th minute. “This was the season opener and winning the first one feels really good,” Swampscott coach Alvi Ibanez said. “ More important than the win is the fact that we played well and recorded a high percentage of ball possession.” Kendra Fitzgerald, Bernhardt (two) and Grace DiGrande each notched assists in the win.

Bernhardt had an impressive game as she made sure to place her name on each one of the goals scored by way of scoring or assisting.  Through the midfield line, the Big Blue had great presence from Sydney Clark and DiGrande. Both showed excellent possession through good decision making.  Strong on the back was freshman, Emma Fogg who played a big game.Next for Swampscott is  against Monument at home at 3:00 PM on Saturday.

Danvers 2, Fenwick 0
Abby Cash and Riley Baker each scored goals for the Falcons. Baker also notched an assist, on Cash’s goal. Both goals were scored in the second half. Danvers starts the season at 1-0.

Saugus 2, Somerville 0
For the Sachems, Alivia Burke scored the first goal of the game on an assist by Allie Kotowski. Olivia Tapia-Gatley scored the second goal on a free kick. Alana Aldred, Allie LeBlanc, Ary Carney and Megan Bluette all played well defensively.

GOLF

Classical 38, Saugus 34
At Gannon, the Rams saw five winners. Travis Ryan won his match 6-3 in the number one spot. Sean Devin won his match 5 1/2-3 1/2. Timmy Nerich won his match 5-4, Brett Bucklin won 5-4 (39), Luke Rao won 5 1/2-3 1/2, and Andrew Patrie split even at 4 1/2. Classical starts the young season at 1-0.

Swampscott 49.5, Somerville 22.5
At Tedesco, Swampscott earned the win and is now 1-0 on the season. The Big Blue saw eight winners in Jake Goldman (5-4), Ryan Graciale (6-3), Max Pegnato (6 1/2-2 1/2), Steven Santanello (6-3), Jack Poska (5 1/2-3 1/2), David Quill (8 1/2-1/2) and Nate Stern (8-1).  

Malden 46, Everett 26
At Mount Hood Golf Club, Malden was led by a pair of skilled juniors in Ried Kankel and Zach Rufo.

Winthrop 53, English 19
The Vikings notch a win in their season opener.
