School Roundup: Classical downs English

The Lynn Classical boys soccer team didn’t see Lynn English in the Lynn City Tournament at all this weekend, but the two teams clashed on Monday evening at Manning Field with the Rams coming out on top, 2-1.

Chris Zelaya notched the first goal for Classical (2-1), then Brian Morales scored the game-winner with just over 25 minutes remaining in the game.

“We played a pretty sleepy first half, to be honest,” said Classical coach Dominick Steadman. “But we came out and played a great final 40 minutes and we were able to gut out a nice win.”

The Rams will host Gloucester at Manning Field on Wednesday.

BOYS SOCCER

Medford 2, Peabody 0

Michael Tansey, Noah Sherman and Chris Bellevue all played well defensively in the loss for Peabody.

The Tanners (0-1) will take on Swampscott on Wednesday afternoon.

GLOUCESTER 5, Saugus 1

The lone goal of the afternoon for the Sachems was scored by Jonathan Rodriguez on a penalty kick. Saugus will look to bounce back on Friday afternoon against Pope John at Anna Parker.

GIRLS SOCCER

Peabody 5, Malden 1

The Tanners notched their first win of the 2017 season on Monday afternoon, led by two goals from Deanna Ruggierio. Emily Nelson had one goal and two assists in the win, while Hailey Baker and Nicole Ruggierio scored one goal each. Amber Kiricoples and Aja Alimonte each had one assist.

On the defensive side of the field, Catherine Manning, Jordyn Collins and Colleen Crotty all played well. Goalkeeper Shelby Doucette had eight saves in the win.

Peabody is now 1-0-1 on the year.

GOLF

St. Mary’s 173, Archbishop Williams 139

The Spartans improved to 2-0 on the young season with a win at Gannon Golf Course on Monday, led by Luke Smith’s 31 points. Brothers Christian and Aidan Emmerich scored 26 points each in the win, while Kevin McMullin had 25 points. Luke Sargent contributed 24 points, Chris Fioravanti had 21 points and Peter Pagliuca scored 20 points.

St. Mary’s is back in action this afternoon when the Spartans host Winthrop at Gannon.

Lynn Classical 30, Lynn English 15

Classical got winning performances from Brendan Lannon, Brett Bucklin, Sean Devin, Travis Ryan and Tim Nerich.

The Rams (2-0) will take on Saugus this afternoon at Cedar Glen Golf Course.

Salem 8, Everett 0

Winners for the Witches (2-0) were Nick Angeramo, Tommy Harrington, Ethan Doyle, Ryan Farley, Tim Farley, Troy Ziffer, Casey Williamson and Clayton Duffin.

Salem will take on Swampscott this afternoon at home.

VOLLEYBALL

Beverly 3, Stoneham 1

The Panthers were victorious with set scores of 25-19, 20-25, 25-13 and 25-11. Senior captain Sydney Wiley had seven aces for Beverly, while senior Maddy Cassidy and junior Kate Mulligan had eight kills each and senior captain Katie Noonan had four kills. Senior captain Brianna Snow played a great defensive game at the libero position.

Tewksbury 3, Marblehead 2

The see-saw match was decided by only two points, as Tewksbury won the last match, 15-13.

The Magicians took matches one and four, 25-20 and 25-12, respectively while Tewksbury won matches two and three, 25-14 and 25-11.

Katie Knight had six kills while Mandy Dumais hads 19 digs and Elisa Garel 15.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Marblehead 23, Malden 35

The Magicians were able to take three of the top five spots overall en route to a win over Malden on Monday. Ethan Snook finished in second place with a time of 18:54, while Harry DiBartolo finished third (19:13) and Will Poss finished in fifth place (19:40).

Marblehead (2-0) will take on Peabody Thursday.

Beverly 19, Lynn English 44

The high finisher on the day for English was Abrar Jalal, who finished second overall with a time of 18:28.

English will run against Malden on Friday.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Marblehead 20, Malden 43

Despite a Malden runner taking first place overall, Marblehead was able to earn the win after the Magicians took the next four spots in the race. Kristy Twaalfhoven was the top finisher for the Magicians, placing second with a time of 21:52. Alix Livermore finished in third place (22:01), Caroline Johnson finished fourth (23:08) and Lily Gillis finished in fifth place (23:36).

Marblehead will run against Peabody on Thursday.

Beverly 15, Lynn English 50

Jackie Ramirez was the top finisher for the Bulldogs, placing eighth overall with a time of 24:48.

English will run against Malden on Friday.
