Murder scene props at Tedesco Country Club caused quite a stir

SWAMPSCOTT — It’s not every day someone sees a dead body face down on a golf course.

One woman driving by the Tedesco Country Club reportedly notified police that Tuesday might have been that day, when she called about a body by a pond on the eighth hole of the course, according to Tim McDonough, Marblehead resident and Tedesco member.

McDonough said the body was actually a mannequin purposely placed there by Tedesco’s women’s member guests, who were putting their props all over the course as part of some kind of gangster scene.

He said a woman driving by slammed on her brakes and called 911. McDonough said he wasn’t there for the incident, but heard about it later when he went out to play. He said responding police came and picked up the mannequin.

“It’s funny as heck,” McDonough said.

Swampscott Police Sgt. Tim Cassidy said the department hadn’t been notified about the country club’s intention to place props on the course before responding, and that people had been calling on it.

Cassidy said the initial call regarding the body/mannequin came in Tuesday morning, but police received a second similar call later that afternoon.

Cassidy said he’s heard two stories — one was that someone is shooting a movie and the mannequin was a movie prop and someone else said the golf course is having some kind of tournament and that was part of it. He said the mannequin was initially confiscated by police, but was later returned.

“Obviously, they should have called us first and said they’re going to be having a mannequin laying next to the pond,” Cassidy said.
