MALDEN — The City Council tonight continues interviewing finalists for city treasurer and, possibly, for a chief financial officer (CFO).
Michael Bertin, former Malden Ward 6 City Councilor Neil Kinnon, who resigned from the council in June, and Andrew Vanni, a former municipal finance director, will be interviewed between 6:30 and 9:30 p.m. in the Malden Senior Center auditorium.
The session follows Tuesday’s interviews that included the former chief financial officer for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA).
Jonathan Davis, a 20-year MBTA veteran employe, left the T in 2015 and has been serving as a financial consultant. In his council interview, Davis stressed transparency is key when dealing with public funds.
“Taxpayers want to see where you are spending the money. They have that right,” he said.
Davis came before the Council after Malden resident Daniel Grover, a longtime Eaton Vance employee where he works as a mutual fund manager. Grover serves as president of the Cemetery Board of Trustees.
Councilors plan to fill the chief financial officer’s job, but they may also choose a city treasurer.
Grover seeks the CFO post that would oversee the treasurer’s, assessors and controller’s departments.
“This would be my career, working for the city of Malden,” he said.
Treasurer Mark Good’s resignation earlier this year prompted discussions between councilors and Mayor Gary Christenson on the CFO selection process.
Christenson was a councilor in the 2009 when the council discussed the need for a CFO. At that time, language was added to city ordinances to allow the treasurer, controller, or assessor to hold a dual role as CFO if so deemed by the Council, which oversees the position.
Malden Councilor-at-Large Craig Spadafora, who serves as chairman of the Treasurer/CFO Search Committee, is expected to complete deliberations in time to fill the jobs as early as Oct. 17.
