REVERE — The city will adopt a new program to help improve citywide communications and safety.
The Revere Police Department and Revere City Hall will partner with Nextdoor, a private social network that allows neighbors to create private websites to communicate about local problems and make recommendations.
Led by Mayor Brian Arrigo and Police Chief James Guido, the integration with Nextdoor will enable the city and police department to facilitate virtual neighborhood watch and share important safety updates, emergency notifications, news, services, and programs with Revere neighborhoods.
More than 76 percent of the city’s neighborhoods are already connected and using Nextdoor, as are thousands of neighborhoods across the United States.
The free service is already being used to get the word out about break-ins, organize neighborhood watch groups, track down babysitters and recommendations for painters and other laborers, and ask for help looking for lost pets.
The program has features that make it safe to share information online that neighbors would share in person, including requiring users to verify their addresses and use their real names.
The unveiling of Nextdoor comes days after the city launched Revere 311, a program that allows residents to report non-emergency problems by dialing 311 or using a phone app.
The program can be used to report anything from potholes to missed trash pickups and was funded using a $54,000 community compact IT grant received last year.
