Jose Luna scored the lone touchdown for the Panthers with a 75-yard kickoff return to start the second half, but it wasn’t enough as Nashoba Tech won the game Saturday, 40-6.
Panthers quarterback Kymani Morrison had another stellar game, finishing with 165 rushing yards.
“We weren’t able to stop a good throwing quarterback early on,” KIPP coach Jim Rabbitt said. “Our pressure was there but we were unable to contain. We stepped up and played an even second half, despite a couple injuries to the offensive and defensive lines.”
KIPP falls to 1-5 with the loss. The Panthers will aim to right the ship on Friday at Chelsea.
Danvers 24, Beverly 21
At Hurd Stadium in Beverly Saturday, senior captain Zach Dillon hit the game-winning 38-yard field goal with 22 second remaining to lift the Danvers.
Junior running back Matt McCarthy did most of the offensive work for the Falcons, rushing for 173 yards and three touchdowns. Two of those touchdowns came in the first quarter, and both of them went for over 50 yards. The first was a 59-yarder that came on the heels of a Falcons interception, and the second was a 63-yarder that came on the final play of the quarter.
Beverly, not to be upstaged, notched a big play of its own right before halftime to get back in the game. Senior quarterback Nick Berry hit senior receiver Clark Marchand for a 64-yard touchdown pass with just 16 seconds left in the half to make it a 14-6 game.
The Panthers surged ahead in the second half, starting with a 13-yard touchdown run from Clayton McAlpine and a two-point conversion from Ameer Alshrafi to tie the score at 14-14. On the final play of the third quarter, Marchand scored his second touchdown of the game on a three-yard run to give Beverly a 21-14 lead.
Then, with 5:32 left to play in the game, McCarthy scored his third touchdown to tie the score at 21-21. The Falcons then forced a three-and-out, got the ball back and drove the ball into field goal range for Dillon to win the game.
Both teams now have a short week, with Danvers (5-1) taking on undefeated Marblehead on the road and Beverly (1-5) traveling to Peabody to face the Tanners.
