School Roundup: Spartans tested by Williams

For the first time all season the St. Mary’s boys soccer team surrendered more than one goal to an opponent but the Spartans remained undefeated with a 4-3 win over Archbishop Williams.

Goal scorers were Thiago De Oliveira, Chris Garcia, Olu George and Nolan Perez, who scored the game winner in the 64th minute. Garcia, De Oliveira (two) and Matt Connolly each dished assists in the win.

“It was a good game,” Spartans coach Mike D’Agostino said. “We fought back from facing our first deficit of the season. We set the tone offensively after a small lapse. Nolan and Thiago played amazing today and Chris helped set the tone. Jose Del Valle and Connor Mackey played solid defense for us.”

St. Mary’s (13-0) visits Cardinal Spellman on Wednesday.

Swampscott 2, Saugus 0

Juan Lopez made 15 saves for the Sachems but the Big Blue defense didn’t break. Saugus (6-3) clashes against Greater Lawrence on Wednesday.

“We played extremely well possession-wise and in the final third,” Saugus coach Larry Bolduc said. “We just couldn’t finish today, despite many one-on-one chances with their goalie.”

Manchester-Essex 2, Lynnfield 1

Jon Luders scored the lone goal for the Pioneers (8-5-3). Lynnfield’s back in action on Wednesday at Pentucket.

Prep 6, Andover 0

Steven Yakita scored two goals and dished an assist, Brian Brennan scored a goal with an assist, Andrew Dembowski scored a goal with an assist and John Campbell scored two goals. Cam and Christian Buckley split the win in net. The Eagles (11-0-2) visit BC High on Wednesday evening.

GIRLS SOCCER

Lynnfield 1, Manchester-Essex 0

Grace Sperling scored in the 75th minute on a double-assist from Liz Shaievitz and Kate Mitchell. Pioneers goalie Mackenzie O’Neill finished with 12 saves.

Lynnfield (10-2-2) hosts Pentucket on Wednesday.

“It was our Senior Night and the seniors did a great job helping us get the win,” Lynnfield coach Mark Vermont said. “Manchester played a great game. It was a state tournament environment.”

VOLLEYBALL

Revere 3, English 0

English fell to the Patriots, 8-25, 6-25 and 11-25. With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 1-11 on the season. They’ll look to add another win on Wednesday when English hosts Beverly for the the Bulldogs’ senior night. English coach Mike Haddad said Gabbi Patterson played well for the Bulldogs.

“Despite the low score, I thought the team played exceptionally well,” Haddad said. “We made Revere fight for every point it got. As a coach, I’m proud the way we played.”

Marblehead 3, Malden 0

The Magicians improved to 10-2 with the win. Set scores were 25-16, 25-9 and 25-10. Lizzie Myers had nine kills and four blocks, and Anna Arbo added six kills. Izzy Curtin had 21 assists. Marblehead’s back in action on Wednesday against Revere.

Beverly 3, Somerville 0

Set scores were 25-15, 25-17 and 25-19. Beverly’s Katie Noonan and Maddie Cassidy each had five service points. Cassidy also added six kills and three digs. Kate Mulligan had two blocks and Sydney Wiley added four service points.

St. Mary’s 3, Salem 2

The Spartans rallied from two sets down to steal victory from the jaws of defeat on Monday evening. St. Mary’s dropped the first two sets, 17-25 and 19-25, before notching three straight set wins, 25-14, 25-16 and 16-14.

Junior Grace Fielding had a huge game from the back line with 17 service points, and she also added five kills. Junior Dorothy Carroll contributed four kills, while sophomore Courtney Kostopoulos played a great defensive game.

GOLF

Gloucester 41.5, St. Mary’s 30.5

St. Mary’s lone winner was Aidan Emmerich, who notched a 7-2 victory in his match. Chris Fioravanti and Nick Cicolini tied their matches. The Spartans (14-3) visit Arlington Catholic on Wednesday.

Hamilton-Wenham 142, Classical 93

In a non-league match, the Rams fell to Hamilton-Wenham. For Classical, the top scorers were Travis Ryan, Luke Rao, Brett Bucklin and Brendan Lannon. The Rams (10-4) visit Winthrop this afternoon.

Somerville 37, Peabody 35

For the Tanners, Scott Chaplin, Brendan Mills, Connor McCarron, Chris Dararian all won their matches. Peabody visits Swampscott this afternoon.

FIELD HOCKEY

Marblehead 3, Revere 0

Annie Ronan, Cricket Thompkins and Madi Monahan each scored goals for the Magicians. Hadley Carlton, Lizzy Potvin and Bel Sogoloff dished assists. Also playing well for the Magicians were Isabel Cody, Madyson Kosar and Sarah Soloman.

Fenwick 5, Everett 0

Cailyn Wesley scored two goals and dished an assist for Fenwick. Julia Steriti scored a goal and dished two assists. Kerry Kircher and Allie Giguere each scored a goal. Bella Gioia played good defensively. Fenwick improved to 4-7-2 and visits Monomoy on Wednesday.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

St. Mary’s 20, Lowell Catholic 37

Austin Prep 24, St. Mary’s 32

Jalen Echevarria (second), Sammy Battista (fourth), Jack Carroll (ninth), Anthony D’Itria (10th) and Kyle Kwiatek (15th) all ran well for St. Mary’s.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

St. Mary’s 23, Lowell Catholic 36

Austin Prep 19, St. Mary’s 41

Nicollette D’Itria (second), Lauren Gonzalez (eighth), Lily Newhall (10th), Grace Couillard (14th) and Thalia Chaves (15th) all ran well for St. Mary’s.
