After a tough slate of recent results, the St. Mary’s girls soccer team got back on track with a 2-0 win over Cardinal Spellman on Wednesday afternoon. Mia Nikolakopoulos scored a goal on an assist from Kayla Demers. Morgan Mackey added the second goal on a penalty kick.

“It was good to get back on track,” Spartans coach Jim Foley said. “We’ve been close and we’ve been slumping a bit. We may have lost Mia to an injury, and that was the lone negative of the game. That’s kind of a tough break.”

Goalie Alex Iacoviello made eight saves.

“My defense and Alex played a great game,” Foley said.

The Spartans (5-6-3) visit Mystic Valley on Friday. St. Mary’s needs five points to clinch a spot in the state tournament, with four games remaining.

“This is crunch time,” Foley said. “Now we have to take care of business.”

GIRLS SOCCER

English 2, Pope John 2

Sydney Denham scored both goals for English.

“Sydney was by far the star of the game,” English coach Ed McNeil said. “I had to move her from defense to forward and she played a great game.”

Tommi Hill played stout in net and Grace Gately led the defense.

“It was a good game for us,” McNeil said. “We honored our 10 seniors for our senior night. We also honored Pope John’s 12 seniors.”

English (3-10-2) hosts Revere on Friday.

Lynnfield 3, Pentucket 0

Liz Shaievitz scored on an assist from Sydney Santosuosso to put Lynnfield up 1-0. Kate Mitchell and Hannah Filipe added late goals to seal the win. Lynnfield (11-2-2) visits Masconomet on Friday.

Olu George and Thiago De Oliveira each scored two goals while Jose Del Valle, Greyson Pane and Jackson Nickolau each scored one goal. Del Valle and Pane scored their first varsity goals in the win. Joseph Thongsythavong dished three assists.

With the victory, the Spartans close their CCL schedule at 10-0, marking the first time that St. Mary’s has gone undefeated in conference play.

“Personally, it’s a huge accomplishment for myself and for the team,” Spartans coach Mike D’Agostino said. “It’s a huge step in the nine years that I’ve been here. We have one more goal now and that’s states.”

Goalie Richie Mateo earned his 10th shutout win.

The Spartans (14-0) visit Malden Catholic on Friday.

“I’m very pleased,” D’Agostino said. “We have four non-league games to finish the regular season. We’re looking to get some wins and gain some momentum.”
