Grace Gately played hero for the English girls soccer team against Salem on Monday night, scoring a goal in the final 40 seconds to send the Bulldogs home with a 1-1 tie.
Gately, Tora Ueland and Sydney Denham all played well defensively while Tommi Hill provided another solid outing at goalie.
“It was a great game from both sides,” English (3-10-4) coach Ed McNeil said. “Salem beat us 1-0 the last time we played. It’s become a good rivalry with them.”
GIRLS SOCCER
Classical 2, Everett 0
The Rams got goals from Izzy McGaughey and freshman Hannah Guthrie (her first varsity goal) en route to the shutout win. Madison Dana logged her third shutout in five varsity starts in net.
“It was a gutsy win tonight, (and I’m) very proud of the girls,” coach Mark Ierardi said. “We were missing three varsity starters, but got great performances from Olivia White, Caprice Beato, Kacey Rouse, Jessica Page and Cate Hines off the bench.”
The Rams (7-8) have Malden next up on Wednesday.
Swampscott 4, Medford 1
With the win, the Big Blue clinched a spot in the state tournament on Monday afternoon. Haley Bernhardt added two goals, while Anna Marston and Sydney Clark each had one assist.
The midfield line for the Mustangs displayed excellent ball possession and prevented Swampscott from generating offense early in the game. Swampscott midfielders Grace DiGrande and Sarah Tribendis stepped up along with defender Emma Fogg, shut down the ball possession of the opponent, and generated some offense for the Big Blue. From there, the Swampscott forwards received clear looks at the goal and were able to capitalize early in the second half.
The Big Blue (9-5-1) will travel to Marblehead for a Northeastern Conference battle against the Magicians on Friday afternoon.
Peabody 1, Beverly 0
It was Emily Nelson who broke the deadlock with a goal on an assist from Jillian Arigo to give Peabody the shutout win on Monday. Arigo also played a great defensive game, along with Colleen Crotty, Aja Alimonte, Catherine Manning and Jordyn Collins. Kolby Alves and Emma Darling played solid games at forward, while goalkeeper Jordan Muse had 12 saves to earn the shutout.
The Tanners continue to try to improve their seeding in the upcoming state tournament, improving their record to 9-2-3 on the year, with a 7-1-1 record in the Northeastern Conference. Peabody will host Danvers on Wednesday.
Saugus 3, Malden 0
The Sachems are still undefeated with just two games left to play in the regular season after a shutout victory against the Golden Tornados. Allie Kotkowski netted two goals, and Allison LeBlanc added another on a free kick. Rachel Nazzaro, Cailey MacEachern, Kiley Ronan and Gabby Moreschi also played well for Saugus.
The Sachems visit Winthrop Wednesday, and will hold a makeshift under-the-lights senior night on Friday at Anna Parker at 7.
BOYS SOCCER
Winthrop 3, Saugus 0
Saugus falls to 8-4 and visits Greater Lawrence on Wednesday.
“They got the better of us on two direct kicks and scored on the rebounds,” Saugus coach Larry Bolduc said. “We just couldn’t connect anything and get an open shot on net.”
St. John’s Prep 3, St. John’s Shrewsbury 0
The Eagles (13-0-3) are undefeated with two games left to go after shutting out St. John’s Monday. Sophomore Sam Smith and seniors Mitch Collins and Steven Yakita were the scorers, and Yakita’s goal was his 20th of the season. Goalie Cam Buckley stopped three shots.
VOLLEYBALL
Peabody 3, Wakefield 1
Jillian Alimonte had nine kills and three assists, and Julissa Jaylei played a strong all-around game as the Tanners improved to 14-2. They’ll visit Marblehead this afternoon.
Masconomet 3, Marblehead 1
The Magicians fought hard but could not get over the hump against a strong Masconomet team, falling with set scores of 14-25, 25-15, 8-25 and 24-26.
Mandy Dumais had a big game in the loss with 30 digs, while Anna Arbo contributed seven kills. Izzy Curtin had 20 assists.
With the loss, Marblehead falls to 11-4 on the season.
GOLF
Div. 3 North sectional
The St. Mary’s golf team advanced to the state finals for the second straight year with a second-place finish in the Div. 3 North sectional Monday.
The Spartans scored 314 as a team to clinch a trip to Great Barrington next Monday for the state final.
Christian Emmerich led the way, scoring a 73, followed by his brother, Aidon Emmerich (77), Aedan Leydon (81), Chris Fioravanti (83) and Luke Smith (84).
FIELD HOCKEY
Central Catholic 3, Fenwick 0
Caylin Wesley played well in attack and Katherine Clancy played well in defense. Lauren Wilkinson had a strong performance at goalie. Fenwick’s (6-8-2) back in action on Friday at Swampscott.
