MARBLEHEAD — It’s not everyday one of the country’s best-known authors comes to your book club.
That’s what happened Wednesday, when Alice Hoffman spoke to a crowd at Temple Sinai Synagogue. The appearance was part of The Jewish Community Center of the North Shore’s Jewish Book Month Speaker Series.
“Initially it was a great surprise,” said Director of Public Relations Karen Robinson. “[Hoffman] was one of the bigger speakers we got for the series.”
A New York Times bestelling author of over 30 books, Hoffman talked about her new book “Rules of Magic” a prequel to her earlier work “Practical Magic” which was adapted into a 1998 movie starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman.
She also spoke about her book “Dovekeepers,” a historical fiction based on the Siege of Masada during the end of the First Jewish-Roman War.
Hoffman spoke about her passion to explore the relationships of women in her works and read an excerpt from “Rules of Magic,”
The Jewish Book Month, put together with help from Chairperson Rhonda Gilberg, is actually a three-month event. The series kicked on September and has hosted several guests, including journalist Lesley Stahl and radio host Michael Krasny. Future speakers include David G. Dalin and Sarah Lamstein.
