Wegmans is set to open its Medford store

MEDFORD— Wegmans will open its doors on Sunday, welcoming shoppers to the Meadow Glen shopping complex’s flagship store.

Under construction for over a year, the 120,000 square foot supermarket will be Medford’s largest single-site employer, staffed with more than 450 full and part-time employees.

Store manager Kevin Russell said there is a lot to like about the new, state-of-the-art supermarket.

“Our Medford store also has two newer features that aren’t found in our other New England locations,” Russell, a 31-year Wegmans employee, said in a statement. “The Burger Bar is a family-friendly in-store restaurant counter, serving burgers and sandwiches, salads, soup, sides, and beer and wine by the glass. The Pizza Shop here offers made-to-order pizzas baked in a custom rotating brick hearth oven, along with Sicilian-style pizza by the slice.”

Customers will visit different shops as they move through the store, as one would in a European open-air market.

Customers who arrive early on opening day can join employees in “The Wegmans Cheer” at 6:55 a.m.

Wegmans is the third major chain retail store to move to Meadow Glen on the Mystic Valley Parkway.

During past month, Medford city officials and residents have welcomed two other well-known major national chain stores to the complex, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Petco Animal Supplies, both of which have held grand openings.

Wegmans has been hiring for its Medford store since February and during the last month the chain’s executives brought in a management team and quickly introduced the managers to city officials and residents.

The new supermarket will include a Market Café with indoor and outdoor seating for more than 200 customers, as well as The Burger Bar and Pizza Shop.

Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. is a 94-store supermarket chain with stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, and Massachusetts.
