The Saugus football team is finding its rhythm late in the season as the Sachems rolled to a 22-6 win over visiting Amesbury Saturday afternoon at Stackpole Field.
Saugus took an early 7-0 lead on Marvens Jean’s 11-yard run, and Jean added his second touchdown of the day in the third quarter on a 27-yard run. Quarterback Mike Mabee added a five-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, and found Christian Correia with a two-point conversion pass on the Sachems’ third touchdown.
Saugus will look to continue its hot streak on the road at Greater Lowell next week.
Swampscott 33, Weston 6
The Big Blue put up 27 points before Weston could get on the board Saturday at Blocksidge Field. Rushing touchdowns from quarterback Colin Frary (1 yard) and Dylan January (16-yard run) and receptions from Jonathan Oriakhi (65 yards), Isaiah Bascon (35 yards) and Jake McIntire (16 yards) led the Big Blue to the decisive win. Noah Carreiro also had a big sack on Weston’s 4th-and-goal in the first quarter.
Division 3 North Semifinals
Tewksbury 21, Danvers 20
It all came down to a two-point conversion for No. 6 Danvers Saturday night, and unfortunately for the Falcons the pass fell incomplete with 1:13 left in the game.
The Falcons found themselves down 21-0 early in the second half, but were able to get one touchdown back on an incredible leaping 10-yard reception from Tahg Coakley.
But still, as the second half wore on, Danvers still trailed by two touchdowns. It wasn’t until the final five minutes of the game that things got interesting.
After Matt McCarthy snagged an interception for the Falcons with just over five minutes left, the Falcons marched down the field into the red zone. Coakley played the hero once again, grabbing another 10-yard touchdown catch to make it 21-14 with 3:16 left.
The Danvers defense came up big and got the offense the ball back with 2:35 to go and 71 yards between the line of scrimmage and a chance to tie the game. After marching 45 yards, quarterback Justin Mullaney threw his third touchdown pass of the game, this time a 26-yarder to McCarthy, to make it 21-20 with 1:13 remaining. The decision was then made to go for the win instead of the tie, and unfortunately for the Falcons the play was unsuccessful. They attempted to get the ball back on an onside kick but couldn’t recover, and Tewksbury ran the clock out for the win.
Danvers is now 6-3 on the year after its elimination from the playoffs.
GIRLS SOCCER
Brookline 2, Peabody 1 (PKs)
The No. 6 Tanners lasted through all of regulation and two overtimes, but in the end they couldn’t last all the way through penalty kicks as they fell to No. 3 Brookline in the Division 1 North quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon. Peabody’s goal came just before the half when freshman Aja Alimonte scored off a corner kick. Goalkeeper Jordan Muse had her biggest game of the year, recording an impressive 16 saves including a big one in the first round of PKs.
After starting a host of underclassmen this year, Peabody coach Dennis Desroches can’t say enough about his team’s growth this year.
“I am so proud of this team they way they improved and competed throughout the season,” he said. “This young team showed tremendous growth over this season led by the trio of captains Emily Nelson, Jillian Arigo and Ava Marotta. Our seniors are great leaders and demonstrated how to conduct ourselves not only on the field but in the classroom. It was an outstanding year and I congratulate all our players and thank them for everything they’ve done for me, our program and our school. I’m very fortunate to be associated with such a great group.”
