MEDFORD — The City Council race has frequently dominated the attention on Election Day, despite the presence of a contested mayoral race, and this year is no different.
The forecast is highly favorable for incumbent Mayor Stephanie M. Burke, who seeks reelection to second term over political newcomer David McKillop. She is expected to secure a new two-year term in Medford’s top post.
There are 14 candidates in the running for seven seats in the Council race and there could be a shakeup considering the preliminary election results.
Longtime School Committeewoman Ann Marie Cugno, who consistently tops the voting in the school board race, finished seventh in the preliminary, just 112 votes behind the next spot in the pecking order, incumbent Adam Knight.
Incumbents finished in the top six, including John Falco, followed by Michael Marks, Breanna Lungo-Koehn, George Scarpelli, Richard Caraviello and Knight. The seventh incumbent, Fred Dello Russo Jr., finished eighth in the preliminary, three votes behind Cugno.
Nine candidates are vying for six Medford School Committee seats, with five incumbents seeking reelection, including Erin DiBenedetto, Kathy Kreatz, Mea Mustone, Paulette van der Kloot and the “dean” of the School Committee, Robert Emmett Skerry Jr. They are challenged by Angela Moore, Alexis Rodriquez, Michael Ruggiero and Paul Ruseau.
