Saugus police release new details in the Square One Mall carjacking

SAUGUS — The investigation into a violent carjacking outside Dick’s Sporting Goods Sunday night is ongoing.

A white male in his mid-to-late 30s with graying brown hair and a goatee allegedly took a taxi from Lynn to the Square One Mall, where police say he stole three expensive jackets, valued at a total of $879.

The incident happened at about 6:45 p.m. Sunday, according to a statement from Saugus Police.

The taxi driver saw that his fare was being chased by another man, and tried to back out of the parking space, but the suspect smashed through the driver’s side window and tried to jump through. He managed to open to door using the interior handle and pulled the driver out of the cab, according to police.

He stole the cab, a 2008 gray Ford Fusion with Massachusetts Taxi license plate “412C,” and drove away in the direction of Essex Street. He was wearing a black jacket and a grey hat and is expected to have notable hand injuries from breaking the glass, according to the statement.

As of Monday morning, the vehicle had not been recovered.

Anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident, or who encounters the taxi, is asked to immediately call their local police department or Saugus Police at 781-941-1199.
