MALDEN — One of the most politically-charged municipal appointments in recent memory is expected to be made when the City Council resumes the selection of a new Treasurer.
On Nov. 2, councilors deadlocked in their vote on the two finalists, former Malden Ward 6 City Councilor Neil Kinnon and former interim MBTA General Manager Jonathan Davis. A third finalist, Daniel Grover, was eliminated in the first round.
The vote gave five to Kinnon and five to Davis. Two additional voting rounds failed to unlock the tie.
Councilors postponed a new vote on the Treasurer’s job until tonight’s City Council meeting. The drama begins again at 7 in the John and Christina Markey Senior Center.
Ten councilors voted on Nov. 2. There are 11 council seats, one from each of the city’s eight wards and three at-large councilors. But Kinnon’s seat has been empty since he resigned as Ward 6 councilor last summer.
New Ward 6 Councilor David Camell is poised to break the tie.
Camell defeated Ward 6 School Committeeman Jerry Leone by a large margin in last Tuesday’s election. Neither candidate has said how they would vote on the Treasurer job.
Camell was sworn in as Ward 6 Councilor two days after the election by City Clerk Thomas Brennan.
Voting for Kinnon were Councilors Paul Condon, Barbara Murphy, Jadeane Sica and Councilors-at-Large David D’Arcangelo and Craig Spadafora.
Voting for Davis were Council President Peg Crowe, John Matheson, Ryan O’Malley, Neal Anderson, and Councilor-at-Large Debbie DeMaria.
