LYNN — As winter approaches, fuel and home energy assistance is available to eligible households.
Lynn Economic Opportunity, a nonprofit whose mission is to help the needy, offers a program that helps eligible homeowners and renters pay for their winter heating bills.
To be eligible for up to $1,100 in fuel assistance, applicants must meet the following income guidelines: family of one, $34,380, a family of two, $44,958, a family of three, $55,537, a family of four, $66,115, a family of five, $76,693, a family of six, $87,272.
The programs are expected to get more than 3,500 applicants. But the program could reach even more people, according to Darlene Gallant, community services director.
“We know there is probably a lot more people who are eligible and do not know it,” she said.
Energy audits are offered that can identify appliances in the home that are eligible for free replacement such as refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines, and dehumidifiers that fail to meet efficiency standards.
They can also provide free insulation, air sealing, checks for carbon monoxide and gas leaks, and other weatherization programs that could save recipients 25 percent on their bills.
“It’s important for us to check people’s heating systems and make their homes more energy efficient and cost saving so they won’t need help with a new problem every year,” Gallant said.
