Spartans boys soccer hands out team awards

LYNN – The St. Mary’s boys soccer team, which went undefeated during the regular season, held its awards dinner last week with Joseph Thongsyavong being named team MVP.

Other awards went to Chris Garcia, best offensive player; Jose Del Valle, best defensive player; Nolen Perez, hustle; Matt Connolly, unsung hero; Thiago De Oliveira, coaches award; Ryan Ramsey, leadership/alumni; Conor Mackey, toughness.

Garcia and Richie Mateo won Hall of Fame awards. Captains for next season are Thongsythavong, Perez, De Oliveira, and Olu George.

This season, the Spartans achieved the best record in the history of the school (17-0-1), and won the Catholic Central League championship. St. Mary’s also won the Lynn city championship and earned the top seed in the Division 4 North state tournament.

The team featured seven Catholic Central League all-stars, and two Eastern Mass. all-stars. The team scored 12 shutouts, all of them recorded by keeper Mateo, who was the league MVP. In addition, the team scored 64 goals.

League all-stars included Garcia, Mateo, George, De Oliveira, Thongsythavong and Perez. Mateo and Garcia were EMass all-stars.

Junior varsity awards went to Joshua Chez, best offensive player; Julian Del Valle, best defensive player; Matt Gallego, MVP; Thiago Pereira, JV coaches award; and Kevin Espino hustle.
