Devin has golden touch, but Lynn falls in hockey jamboree

It would appear the offenses are ahead of the defenses in Lynn and Peabody.

Sean Devin scored four goals Sunday — three of them in regulation and one during a protracted shootout. But the Lynn Jets fell to Peabody, 7-6, in that shootout, in the wildest game of Sunday’s Salem State High School Hockey Jamboree at Rockett Arena.

“We came out flat,” said Lynn coach Mike Roberts. “We gave up three quick goals right off the bat.”

From there, Lynn clawed its way back in, culminating when Devin’s third goal of the game, with 10 seconds left on the clock to tie the game at 6-6, forcing the extra time.

The shootout went seven players deep before Peabody settled the issue.

“The offense looked good for both teams,” Roberts said. “Our first two lines were really clicking, really making some good plays.

“Both teams were lacking in the defensive area, though,” Roberts said.

Aside from his four goals, Devin had one assist. Brian Clougherty had a goal and three assists, and his brother, Michael, had three assists.

Travis Ryan had a goal and two assists and Andrew Patrie scored a goal.

Lynn has a scrimmage Saturday at Connery Rink against Bedford, and opens its season the following Saturday against Somerville.

In other action, Swampscott fell to Marblehead, 2-1, in a shootout; Beverly blanked Somerville, 5-0; and Saugus got past Revere, 2-1.

In the Swampscott game, Casey Williamson and Brett Benoit scored for the Big Blue.

The shootout went four runs before the Magicians came up with the winning goal.

“I was pleasantly surprised,” said Swampscott coach Gino Faia. “I was happy the way we played. Our goalie, Dan Johnson, was great as usual.

“We have a lot of new faces,” Faia said. “But our guys played hard and we didn’t back down.”

Each game was two periods long with a break in between.
