The Saugus Fire Department battled a two-alarm fire at the First Congregational Church on Hamilton Street on Friday.
Fire Chief Michael Newbury said it began as an exterior fire and traveled up the walls of the church. It is unknown whether anyone was inside the church when the fire started. Firefighters received a call about the situation at 4 p.m.
Firefighters called on National Grid to shut down the electricity and the State Fire Marshall to investigate, said Newbury.
