Gumption on display in Lynn

Congratulations to brand-new entrepreneurs Katherine Peguero and Genesis Grullon who opened their makeup shop, Slay N’ Glam, at 1 Market St. opposite City Hall last Friday.

Maybe their new business name isn’t the easiest one to remember, but who cares? The dynamic duo deserve credit for their willingness to step up and take a positive stand for their city.

The pair graduated English High School and attend Salem State University. They have the maturity and obviously the support from smart friends and family who have faith in the career aspirations of two 21-years-olds.

It’s impossible to talk to Grullon and Peguero and not be infected by their energy and enthusiasm for the good old-fashioned pursuit of a dollar and the opportunity to succeed in business the American way.

Plenty of people sit around and talk about what they consider to be smart business ideas or can’t-miss plans to one-up Google or Amazon. The English High grads set aside all the negatives associated with starting a business and decided they are going to sell popular makeup brands and collaborate with local makeup artists.

Their savvy decision to debut Slay N’ Glam during the holidays demonstrates a keen sense of planning and marketing.

Anyone associated with a business or who has had the nerve to open one knows the daunting statistics surrounding business starts. Many newly-minted entrepreneurs don’t save enough money to sustain their fledgling business long enough to eventually make money.

Still others embark on capitalist ventures without sitting down with a business professional and crafting a sound, goal-oriented business plan. One hallmark of Lynn is the availability of talented people ready and willing to help people interested in starting a business hit the ground running.

Other new business owners fall prey to thinking a talent like cutting hair or cooking is enough to make a business succeed without sound business advice. Every successful business person has a mentor or a battery of advisors who keep the entrepreneur on the right course and rein them in when they start straying away from the business plan.

Peguero and Grullon stepped up and put themselves out there, so to speak, accepting the risk related to owning a business even as they strive to reap the rewards that come from business ownership.

No one in possession of sound judgment hasn’t told them to prepare for lean times and hardship and a strong test of their friendship and professional relationship. But still other mentors surely reminded the pair that they have embarked on an experience of a lifetime that will teach them about business and about character.

We applaud Katherine Peguero and Genesis Grullon as representatives of the spirit that defines Lynn and wish them success.
