Santa keeps spirit of giving alive

December 13, 2017 by tgrillo

Despite working full time, one couple is struggling to find enough cash to put gifts under the Christmas tree for their five children.

“My husband and I are able to provide the basics for our kids, but we seem unable to save enough for Christmas presents,” said the wife.

It’s hard work being poor in America. A couple in Massachusetts who each earn minimum wage make a combined income of less than $46,000. Try raising five children on that. This family tells us they are not receiving any government handouts. They are not alone. It turns out, millions of poor people work full time, but their wages are so low that even holding a 40-hour week job isn’t enough to lift them out of poverty.

While the U.S. Census Bureau reports a family of four needs to earn $23,000 a year to live above the poverty line, they fail to consider Greater Boston’s home and apartment prices which continue to skyrocket.

Everyone knows these low-wage workers are essential contributors to the economy. They care for our aging parents, take care of our children, clean our offices, and more.

She is asking our readers if they can help make this holiday season a little brighter for her family.

“We would appreciate any help you can provide,” mom wrote.

Now in its 50th year, the Item Santa fund tries to make Christmas a little brighter for the less fortunate. To make a donation to Item Santa, clip the coupon in The Item and mail it, with your check, to The Item Salvation Army Santa, P.O. Box 5, Lynn, MA 01903. You can also use the coupon attached to the itemlive.com version of this story.

All donations are listed in Item print editions through the month of December and into 2018, along with a brief message from each donor.

This year, there are  several other ways to donate. To contribute online, go to www.itemsanta.org, where you can make a donation with a credit card.

Those interested in signing up to collect at Santa Island or any business willing to sell stockings should contact David Solimine Sr. or Joel Solimine at (781) 595-1492.

NOTE: The application period for aid from Item Santa has closed and The Item does not process applicants. All questions about the program and distribution of gifts should be directed to Salvation Army at (781) 598-0673.
