School Roundup: Crusaders fire on all cylinders in win

The Bishop Fenwick girls hockey team fired on all cylinders on Wednesday night at Warrior Ice Arena, as the Crusaders found the back of the net eight times en route to an 8-1 win over St. Joseph’s. The Crusaders are now 2-0-0 on the young season. Amanda Blanchette, Lexi McNeil and Olivia LoJacono each scored two goals for Fenwick, while Shannon Nagy and Gabby Davern had one goal each. Senior captain Allie Giguere had three assists in the win.

Fenwick will host Medford/Malden on Sunday morning at McVan/O’Keefe.

GIRLS HOCKEY
Winthrop 4, Masconomet 4
It was a back-and-forth battle for the entire game at Larsen Arena on Wednesday, with the Vikings coming back from two goals down in the end to notch a tie in the first game of the season.
Sophia Kennedy scored her first career varsity goal for Winthrop, while Bella Perrotti and Abby Stafford also scored one goal each. Emma Carleton scored the tying goal with 47 seconds remaining.
Winthrop (0-0-1) will host Peabody/Lynnfield at Larsen on Saturday.
BOYS BASKETBALL

Lynn Tech 87, Fellowship 17

The Tigers improved to 2-0. Rob Wallace scored 24 points, while Belmin Berilo had 14 points. Trayvon Baldwin and Marcus Taylor scored nine points each.

“We played well out there today and everyone got into the game, so it was a good win,” said Tech coach Stevie Patrick.

Tech will host Presentation of Mary Academy on Tuesday night.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Bishop Fenwick 71, North Andover 67 (OT)

The Crusaders were able to squeeze out a close win over North Andover at home. Senior Courtney Norton led the way with 26 points on the night, while senior captain Jennie Meagher had six points, 14 rebounds and four blocks. Junior captain Sammi Gallant had 15 points and junior Olivia DiPietro had 15 points and six steals.

Fenwick will host Cathedral on Friday night.

BOYS HOCKEY

Lynnfield 4, Pentucket 2

George Deroche had two goals and one assist as Lynnfield notched its second win of the year. John Simonetti added one goal and one assist for the Pioneers, while Joey Mack had one goal. Jack Hammersly had two assists and Kyle Nekoroski had one assist.

The Pioneers (2-0-0) will go back to Valley Forum on Saturday to take on Amesbury.

Beverly 4, Swampscott 1

Beverly’s Kenny Richardson netted his first career goal to help lift the Panthers to a season-opening victory at Bourque Arena. Paul Edson, Ryan Munzing and Steve Hallinan each scored one goal, while Andrew Mezza and Tim McCarthy had one assist each. Beverly (1-0-0) visits Saugus on Saturday.

The lone goal for Swampscott (0-1-0) was scored by Steve Santanello on assists from Brett Benoit and Jack Poska.

Swampscott goalie Dan Johnson made 35 saves.

“Dan kept us in it right until the end,” Swampscott coach Gino Faia said. “He was fantastic as usual.”

The Big Blue visits Gloucester on Saturday.

Saugus 4, Gloucester 4

After taking a 4-1 lead in the third period, the Sachems let up three unanswered goals to finish their season opener in a tie at Kasabuski Rink. Nick Moore had two goals in the draw, while John Torres and CJ Graffeo had one goal each.

Saugus (0-0-1) host Beverly on Saturday.

WRESTLING

St. John’s Prep 62, St. John’s (Shrewsbury) 15

The Eagles won in every weight class on Wednesday afternoon to improve to 5-0. Nick Curley got the win at 106 pounds, while Alec Runnels won at 113 pounds and Kevin Carney won at 120 pounds. Quinn Alexander took the match at 126 pounds, Ryan Garlitz won at 132 pounds, Tim Galvin won at 145 pounds, Ben Shaw won at 160 pounds, Chris Kwmuntis won at 170 pounds and Drew Leahy won at 182 pounds. Max Rodriguez won at 220 pounds and Chad Barnes-Felix won at 285 pounds.

BOYS TRACK

Peabody 60, Gloucester 25

Peabody grabbed wins in all but two events. In the field events, Isaiah Knight took first in the high jump (6 feet) and Eric DeMayo won the shot put (49-7 3/4). On the track, Kevin Aroke won the 45-yard hurdles (6.4 seconds), Amisaday Quijano won the 45 dash (5.2), Jared Ridley won the 300-meter (42.5), Joshua Atemkeng won the one-mile (5:07.5) and Noah Roan won the two-mile (12:51.7).

Swampscott 57, Salem 29

Joe Varghese was a double-winner for the Big Blue, taking the high jump (5-10) and the 45 hurdles (6.7) to help lift Swampscott to a win. Other winners for the Big Blue were Antone Vazquez in the shot put (40-3), Will Fraser in the 1000 (3:01.9), Oliver Daniels-Koch in the one-mile (5:02.5) and Pat Doucette in the two-mile (11:59.0).

Salem got wins from Frederick Koffi in the 45 dash (5.3), Andre Calixte in the 300 (42.4) and Brandon O’Yarvide in the 600 (1:44.3).

GIRLS TRACK

Peabody 65, Gloucester 21

The Tanners got wins from Alexa Flewelling in the high jump (4-10), Courtney Kline in the shot put (27-3), Jolene Murphy in the 45 dash (6.0), Bridget O’Connell in the 600 (1:55.9), Lilly Brennan in the 1000 (3:25.7), Sarah Enes in the one-mile (6:11.9) and Alexandra Barrett in the two-mile (14:15.3).

Swampscott 73, Salem 0

It was a clean sweep for Swampscott on Wednesday, with Alex Papazoglou winning the shot put (25-10), Meredith Zimmer winning the 45 hurdles (7.6), Alexandra Gladstone winning the 45 dash (6.2), Molly Frauenholz winning the 300 (50.7), Ocean Crawley-Sweeney winning the 600 (1:56.2), Anna Conti winning the 1000 (3:54.0), Ashley Marston winning the one-mile (6:15.1) and Genevieve Dishman winning the two-mile (14:07.0).
