Roundup: Swampscott boys hockey falls to Gloucester

The Swampscott boys hockey team traveled up to Talbot Rink in Gloucester Saturday, and it certainly wasn’t a very good trip.

The Big Blue took it on the chin, as the Fishermen grabbed their first win of the season, 8-2, behind a hat trick from Chris Noyes. EJ Field, Jack Sperry, John Mondello, Ethan Brennan and Tim White each scored one goal, while Ryan Muniz had one assist. Gloucester (1-1-1) will host the Lynn Jets on Wednesday evening back at Talbot.

For Swampscott (0-2-0), Brett Benoit led the way with one goal and one assist, while Steve Santanello had one goal. Jack Poska recorded one assist in the loss. The Big Blue will take on Revere/Malden on Wednesday at Rockett Arena in Salem.

St. John’s 2, Hingham 1

The Eagles had a dominant performance in their first game of the season on Saturday, outshooting the powerful Harbormen 30-11. Senior captain Tim Usalis led the way with one goal and one assist, while Joe Bevere had one goal. Brian Carrabes and Ryan Farrow each had one assist. Cam Ludwig had 10 saves in the win.

The Eagles (1-0) will face an unfamiliar opponent in their next matchup when they take on St. Joseph’s of Connecticut at Essex Sports Center in Middleton on Saturday.

Medford 4, Marblehead 0

Still searching for its first win, Marblehead (0-2-0) will go up against Danvers on Saturday at Rockett Arena in Salem.

Beverly 5, Saugus 0

Pat Coutreau and Andrew Shea both scored their first varsity goals en route to the shutout. Conor Hanlon and Steve Hallinan each had one goal in the win, while Paul Edson had two assists. Goalie Troy Doyle had 15 saves in the shutout for Beverly. The Panthers (2-0-0) will host Peabody at Bourque Arena in Beverly on Wednesday.

Saugus (0-1-1) will search for its first win when it travels to Larsen Arena for a matchup with Winthrop on Wednesday.

Lynnfield 5, Amesbury 1

John Simonetti and George Deroche both had multi-point games to help lead the Pioneers to their third win on the young season Saturday evening at Valley Forum in Haverhill. Simonetti and Deroche each notched one goal and one assist, while Jack Hammersley, Chris Fiorentino and Tyler Murphy scored one goal each. Jaret Simpson, Cooper Marengi, Kyle Nekoroski and Richie Casaletto had one assist apiece.

Lynnfield (3-0-0) will look to make it four in a row when they take on Hamilton-Wenham at McVan/O’Keefe Memorial Rink in Peabody on Wednesday.

St. Mary’s 2, Newburyport 2

St. Mary’s held a 2-1 advantage after two periods, but could not hold on for the win in the end. The Spartans (0-1-1) will host Lowell Catholic at Connery Rink on Wednesday night.

Austin Prep 4, Fenwick 0

The Crusaders (0-1-0) will look for their first win when they go up against Matignon at Stoneham Arena this evening.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Marblehead 5, Beverly/Danvers 1

Mia Salah and Sydney Cresta scored two goals each to help the Magicians take down Beverly/Danvers for the first time in eight years on Saturday afternoon. Bella Peters also added a goal, while Caroline Kinne and Cate Delaney each had one assist. Marblehead (1-1-0) will travel to the Hart Center in Worcester on Wednesday to take on Auburn.

The lone goal for Beverly/Danvers came from Jess Barthelmess. The Panthers (0-2-0) will take on St. Mary’s at Connery Rink on Wednesday.

St. Mary’s 11, Arlington Catholic 2

After a dominant win in their season opener on Saturday afternoon, the Spartans (1-0-0) will look to continue their hot play on Saturday when they travel to New England Sports Center in Marlborough for a matchup with Medway/Ashland.

Winthrop 5, Peabody 2

Winthrop netted five second-period goals to put away the Tanners Saturday.

Kat DiGiulio and Jess Robert scored for the Tanners.

“In the first period we came out to play, and we had them on their heels,” Peabody coach Michelle Roach said. “But in the second, we were too hesitant and Winthrop’s a good club, and they capitalized. We can take away some positive things, but we have to play a full 48 minutes.

BOYS BASKETBALL

St. John’s Prep 76, Newburyport 60

The Eagles earned their first win of the season on Saturday with the help of Matt Relihan, who led the team with 15 points. Tommy O’Neill was right behind with 13 points, while Jarnel Snow-Guzman had 12 points. Nate Hobbs had eight points in the win.

St. John’s Prep (1-1) will travel up to Methuen on Saturday to take on Andover.

South Shore 62, Salem Acad. 30

At Hingham, Ali Kachmer had 25 points and 10 rebounds to lead the 2-1 Navigators. Ryan Leclair had 13 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

South Shore 46, Salem Acad. 43

At Hingham, Lindsay Russell had 14 points, and Elise Cote had 10 for the 1-2 Navigators.

WRESTLING

St. John’s Prep 50, Salem (NH) 28

St. John’s Prep 21, Franklin 32

St. John’s Prep 45, Lawrence 30

The Eagles had five wrestlers go 3-0 in the tri-meet on Saturday en route to three big wins. Ryan Garlitz won all his matches at 132 pounds, while Zach Alexander swept at 138 pounds, Achilles Gikas swept at 145 pounds, Chris Kwmuntis swept at 170 pounds at Owen Gaffney swept at 195 pounds.

Three wrestlers also went 2-1 on the day in Quinn Alexander (126 pounds), Ben Shaw (160 pounds) and Chad Barnes-Felix (285 pounds).

St. John’s Prep (7-1) will wrestle against Mansfield on Wednesday.

Lisitano Tournament

At Wakefield, Marblehead-Swampscott had several impressive performances. Dean Warren (182) finishied third, Ian Shevory (113) and Michael Hopkins (120) fourth, Amani Dotson (195) fifth and Connor O’Brien (106) sixth.
