School Roundup: Sachems roll past Magicians

The Saugus girls basketball team put forth a strong performance on both sides of the court on Monday night, taking down the Marblehead Magicians, 50-27, at home. The offensive effort was led by Taylor Bogdanski, who scored nine points and also played well defensively. Marissa Stockwell also had a big game with six points on two made three-pointers.

“It was great to get Marissa back in action tonight” said Saugus coach Mark Schruender. “Her shot-making ability is really going to help us this year.”

Schruender was happy with all facets of the win on Monday, pointing to passing specifically.

“Tonight was really good for us in terms of making the extra pass,” said Schruender. “The girls are really starting to fall into the framework of the offense and it’s all coming together nicely.”

The Sachems (2-1) will be back in action on Thursday night when they travel to Beverly for a conference game against the Panthers.

For Marblehead (0-2), Hannah Garthe was the top scorer with 10 points. Emily Clough added 10 rebounds in the loss. The Magicians will take on Gloucester on Thursday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Somerville 35, English 34

With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 1-1 on the season. Stacy Abreu continued her impressive start to the year with 10 points and seven rebounds. Ravyn Rapley added eight points and eight rebounds for English. The Bulldogs will aim to bounce back on Thursday night when they host Winthrop.

Beverly 43, Swampscott 32

Despite the loss, the Big Blue got a massive performance from Nikki Rosa, who notched a double-double. Rosa put up 19 points with 12 rebounds on the night, while Grace DiGrande added eight points in the loss.

BOYS BASKETBALL

English 64, Somerville 63

The Bulldogs improve to 2-0 on the young season with a close win at Northeastern Conference newcomer Somerville. Ademide Badmus led the way for English, logging a double-double at 16 points and 12 rebounds. Louis Rivera Jr. added 11 points and four rebounds, Alonzo Linton scored 12 points to go along with eight assists and six rebounds and Javaris Hill finished with 11 points and nine rebounds. The Bulldogs are back on the court on Thursday night at Winthrop before Friday night’s home opener against Malden Catholic.

Marblehead 81, Saugus 35

It was all Magicians from the middle of the second quarter on as Derek Marino led the way with 16 points and nine rebounds. Sean McCarthy  added 11 points and nine steals, while Dan Doherty and William Ackerman each had 11 points. Dewey Millett had eight points and 10 rebounds in the win. The Magicians (2-0) will play a road game against Gloucester on Thursday.

Marblehead scored the game’s firsts eight points, and had an 18-11 lead after a quarter. Saugus managed to get the lead down to four (24-20) early in the second quarter before Marblehead reeled off 16 straight points to put the same away early.

Salem 53, Medford 47

The Witches got 18 points from Ethan Espinal to notch their second win of the season on Monday night. Nate Lebron added 15 points in the win, while Isaiah Williamson had a big all-around game with 10 points and eight rebounds.

Salem (2-0) will host Everett on Thursday night.

Beverly 69, Swampscott 47

Toskany Abreu was the top scorer on the night for both teams, leading Beverly with 17 points. Micah Davies added 16 points for the Panthers.

For Swampscott (1-2), Jake McIntire had a big game in the loss with 14 points, five rebounds and four assists. The Big Blue will take on Lynn Classical on Thursday night.
