REVERE — Police were able to prevent a 71-year-old man’s possible suicide on Tuesday morning, negotiating with him for several hours while the man was in his car.
Officers responded to the Northgate Shopping Center around 8:15 a.m. on a report of a suicidal man with a boxcutter, Revere Police Lt. Amy O’Hara said.
Revere Police negotiators and SWAT teams responded to the scene. Negotiations with the man, who was inside his car, lasted for about four hours, O’Hara said.
Police decided to enter the car after the man’s actions led them to believe that he would harm himself. No injuries were sustained, O’Hara said.
The man, who is currently homeless, was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
“Negotiations is always the preferred response in these situations,” O’Hara said. “This was a positive outcome because of the collaboration and teamwork of Revere Police patrol officers, negotiators and SWAT team members who completely understand each other’s roles in an incident like this. (Police) Chief (James) Guido emphasized the good work of all officers.”
