Nahant’s winter parking ban in full effect

December 27, 2017 by Bella diGrazia

NAHANT — The first day of winter has arrived, bringing with it Nahant’s Winter Parking Policy. All vehicles must be parked off the street during the hours of 12 a.m. to 6 a.m. from December 21, 2017 to March 20, 2018.

“The ban started about 10 years ago so we could do something about residents who deal with limited parking,” said Nahant Lieutenant Paul Manley.

The Nahant Police Department acknowledges those without adequate off-street parking and insists they pick up a Parking Waiver Application at the Nahant Police Station.

In order to process each request for a parking waiver, a $30 nonrefundable application fee is required to be paid by check or money order made payable to the “Town of Nahant.” The fee cannot be paid in cash and must be paid prior to review of the application.

“The reason we developed this was to help the town’s people,” said Manley. “Now, there are more cars than there are houses, which leaves no parking.”

The Winter Parking Policy states that all vehicles, with or without a parking waiver, must be off the street when it snows or when a snow emergency has been declared. Any vehicle left on the street during snowfall will be subject to a $50 fine for impeding snow removal and will also be subject to a towing charge.

“It’s been beneficial for the people,” said Manley. “When there is a threat of snow people know to get their cars off the streets.”

When asked where residents could find available off-street parking, the Nahant Police Department gave no comment.

For more information on the Winter Parking Policy, you can visit the Nahant Police Department website.
