The St. Mary’s swim team opened its season with an 85-75 win over Matignon Saturday at its new home pool: the new health and wellness center at St. John’s Prep.
Not only did the Spartans win, but one of their victors was a 6th-grader, Kyle Kwiatek, who won the 100 backstroke in 1:18:28.
Overall, it was a very good season-opening win, said coach Michelle Brewster. The 200 free relay team of Gabi Marchese, Pius Nguyen, Danny Rodriguez and Edurado Toranzo won in 1:57.81, more than a half-minute ahead of the second-place finishier.
Also winning for the Spartans werre Marchese in the 200 free (2:12.63) and 100 fly (1:08.03); Nguyuen, 50 free (287.47), and Rodriguez, 100 free (1:08.97).
St. Mary’s is back in action Thursday at Boston Latin Academy.
GIRLS HOCKEY
Peabody 5, Beverly 0
The Tanners improved to 4-2-1 with the shutout win on the road at Bourque Arena on Saturday. Peabody/Lynnfield will host Wellesley at McVan/O’Keefe Memorial Rink on Friday.
The Panthers (2-5-0) will travel to Methuen High on Wednesday for a game against Tewksbury/Methuen.
Fenwick 2, Oakmont 2
At McVann-O’Keefe Rink Sunday morning, the Crusaders got off to a slow start, according to coach Doug Anderson, but scored twice in the final two periods on goals by Allie Giguere and Lexi McNeil.
However, after taking a 2-1 lead with seven minutes to go in the game, Oakmont put one in with just over 3:00 left.
“We played well enough after getting off to a slow start,” Anderson said, “but it’s a game I feel we should have won.”
St. Mary’s 6, Matignon 1
At Connery Rink in Lynn Saturday, after Kelsey Sullivan scored the only goal in the first period, the Spartans exploded for four in the middle period, two of them by Aylah Cioffi (hat trick for the game), and both of them short-handed.
Also scoring for the Spartans were Gianna Chaplain and Sam Porazinaki. Lauren Vaccaro played well in goal, coach Frank Pagliuca said.
The Spartans raised their record to 5-1.
BOYS BASKETBALL
St. John’s 66, Arlington 45
At St. John’s, the Eagles ran their record to 6-1, with Jared Snow-Guzman and Tommy O’Neil leading the way with 16 points each.
Nate Hobbs chipped in with nine points.
Fenwick 56, Austin Prep 36
At Austin Prep, Nick Pigone had 21 points and Jack Keenan chipped in with nine. Freshman Christian Lopes pulled down 11 rebounds and had two assists.
The Eagles open the Catholic Conference portion of their season Tuesday at Catholic Memorial.
BOYS TRACK
Salem 60, English 22
The Witches captured six events to grab a win on Saturday. Winners for Salem were Joseph Diaz in the shot put (36 feet, 1/2 inch), Bryan Benitez-Dejesus in the 55-meter hurdles (10.3 seconds), Bryan Palacios in the 300 (41.9), Brandon O’Yarvide in the 600 (1:43.6), Patrick Collins in the one-mile (5:13.9) and Saul De Leon in the two-mile (12:37).
Juan Avelino was a double-winner for English, grabbing wins in the high jump (5-11) and the 55 dash (7.0). The Bulldogs also got a win from Jalal Abrar in the 1000 with a time of 2:53.7.
Danvers 73, Gloucester 12
It was a clean sweep for Danvers on Saturday, with double-winner Jack Brown taking first in both the high jump (5-6) and the 300 (42.0) to lead the way. Other winners for the Falcons were Lance Ledesma in the shot put (39-11), Bryan Davidson in the 55 hurdles (10.1), Loic Dowd in the 55 dash (7.3), Kevin Jordan in the 600 (1:48.5), Tim West in the 1000 (3:00.1), Liam Breen in the one-mile (5:01.9) and Andrew Moriarty in the two-mile (11:16.7).
GIRLS TRACK
English 55, Salem 3
The English girls swept the field on Saturday morning to grab a win. Winners for the Bulldogs included Kahlee Smith-Whelton, who won both the shot put (29-10) and the 55 dash (8.3). Other winners were Maisha Bellal in the 55 hurdles (12.4), Brenda Perez in the 300 (57.6), Faidat Amisu in the 600 (2:20.7), Lauren Moorehouse in the 1000 (4:25.2), Jackie Ramirez in the one-mile (6:33.4) and Erin Galloway in the two-mile (15:16.0).
Danvers 44 1/2, Gloucester 41 1/2
Despite winning five events to Danvers’ four, Gloucester lost in total points on Saturday in a tough loss. The winners for Danvers were Dessa Daras in the shot put (27-1), Gabrielle Loughlin in the 300 (47.2), Julie Kee in the 600 (1:57.2) and Olivia Viel in the one-mile (6:26.6).
Gloucester got wins from Liz Kuhns in the high jump (4-8), Kaitlin Marques in the 55 hurdles (9.5), Lauren Wood in the 55 dash (8.2), Leah Rudolph in the 1000 (3:33.8) and Aidan Cunningham in the two-mile (14:16.0).
