The St. Mary’s swim team opened its season with an 85-75 win over Matignon Saturday at its new home pool: the new health and wellness center at St. John’s Prep.

Not only did the Spartans win, but one of their victors was a 6th-grader, Kyle Kwiatek, who won the 100 backstroke in 1:18:28.

Overall, it was a very good season-opening win, said coach Michelle Brewster. The 200 free relay team of Gabi Marchese, Pius Nguyen, Danny Rodriguez and Edurado Toranzo won in 1:57.81, more than a half-minute ahead of the second-place finishier.

Also winning for the Spartans werre Marchese in the 200 free (2:12.63) and 100 fly (1:08.03); Nguyuen, 50 free (287.47), and Rodriguez, 100 free (1:08.97).
