It was a split weekend for the Marblehead girls hockey team. The Magicians fell to Masconomet Saturday, 3-2; and rebounded Sunday morning for a 4-2 win over Bishop Fenwick.
Saturday, Mia Salah and Sydney Cresta each scored one goal and Ally DiGiovanni had one assist in the loss. Sunday, Bella Peters had one goal and one assist to lead the way, while Sydney Cresta, Cate Dullaney and Caroline Kinne each scored one goal. Mia Salah, Juliette Piersol, Grace Moroney and Chloe Trudel each had one assist in the win.
The Magicians (6-3-0) will play a road game against Beverly on Saturday at Bourque Arena.
Fenwick got goals from Mady Williams and Amanda Blanchette in the loss, while Shannon Nagy and Olivia Lajacono each had one assist.
The Crusaders (4-4-1) will make the long trip out to Auburn on Saturday for a game at Auburn Skating Arena.
Peabody 5, Medford 0
Sammi Mirasolo became the first girls hockey player this season to score 20 points as she scored two goals in the shutout win over Medford on Saturday. Kat DiGiulio added two goals in the win and goalie Jeny Collins had the shutout in net.
Peabody (5-3-1) will host Beverly at McVan/O’Keefe Memorial Rink on Wednesday.
The Mustangs (2-8-0) will host Watertown at LoConte Rink on Wednesday.
Beverly 1, Winthrop 0
Beverly goalie Maddy Jalbert was the standout player in this matchup, notching 32 saves to blank Winthrop on Saturday. Jamie Dupont scored the deciding goal on assists from Marlee Hamor and Emma Knott.
The Panthers (3-6-0) will play a road game against Peabody at McVan/O’Keefe Memorial Rink on Wednesday.
Winthrop (5-2-1) will host Waltham on Wednesday at Larsen Arena.
Austin Prep 3, St. Mary’s 1
The Spartans lost just their second game of the season, and their first in the Catholic Central League, with the loss to rival Austin Prep on Saturday.
St. Mary’s (6-2-0) will play an afternoon road game against Quincy at the Quincy Youth Arena this afternoon.
BOYS BASKETBALL
St. Mary’s 61, Mt. Pleasant (R.I.) 58
In what could prove to be one of the signature wins of the year, the Spartans came back from down nine points in the fourth quarter to beat the No. 3-ranked team in the state of Rhode Island at Conigliaro Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans trailed 26-25 at halftime before Mt. Pleasant was able to stretch out the lead in the second half. But after St. Mary’s roared back to tie the score with 2:49 to play, it was all Spartans. Joey Abate-Walsh drained a huge three-pointer with under a minute left to take a 56-53 lead, and St. Mary’s hit some clutch free throws down the stretch to seal the comeback victory.
The Spartans (7-1) have a road game against Maynard this afternoon.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
St. Mary’s 60, North Rockland, NY 56
The Spartans (7-3) won their third game in five days as they overcame a 5-point halftime deficit to defeat North Rockland in the Rose Classic Super Jam in Brooklyn, NY.
St. Mary’s was led by game MVP Pamela Gonzalez who had 24 points and Olivia Nazaire who had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Olivia Matela hit two big three pointers during a St. Mary’s 12-0 third quarter run that out the Spartans back in front.
For the game St. Mary’s hit a season high 10 three pointers and was 9-for-10 from the free throw line in the 4th quarter.
