The Lynnfield girls basketball team finally got in the win column Wednesday night.
The Pioneers got off to a fast start with a 6-0 lead in the first two minutes of the opening period and never looked back, defeating Winthrop, 42-33.
Lynnfield (1-7) led 12-4 after one, and 19-13 at halftime, but put the game out of reach with a big third quarter, outscoring Winthrop 15-3 to take a comfortable 34-16 into the final eight minutes, then survived a 17-point outburst to seal the win. Tori Morelli had a big night with a season-high 13 points along with 13 rebounds (9 of them off the offensive glass) and two steals, while Melissa Morelli also was strong with nine points, seven rebounds and four steals. Lizzie Shaievitz had 10 points, while Caroline Waisnor (5 points, 3 steals), Mackenzie O’Neill (3 points) and Grace Klonsky (2 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals) also scored. Lynnfield coach Jim Perry said Megan Nevils (5 rebounds), Anna Maria Ferrante (3 rebounds), Maggie Weaver (3 rebounds) delivered key minutes off the bench and Emory Caswell (3 rebounds, 2 steals) also played well.
Marblehead 40, Medford 36
Darcy O’Sullivan scored 18 points with seven rebounds. Emily Clough grabbed 12 rebounds, and Madi Ernst added eight points, including two clutch free throws down the stretch. Brigette Gable was stellar defensively with seven steals. Marblehead hosts Somerville Friday night.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Marblehead 68, Danvers 47
Derek Marino led the way with 20 points with four steals. Seamus Keaney chipped in 15 points and Dan Doherty added 11 points.
The Magicians (5-4) travel to Somerville Friday.
BC High 83, St. John’s Prep 69
Jarnel Snow-Guzman and Matt Relihan each scored 17 points in the loss,while Tommy O’Neil added 12 points. The Eagles host Malden Catholic Friday night.
BOYS HOCKEY
Somerville 5, Lynn 4
Mike Clougherty scored two goals while Brian Clougherty and John Difilippo each scored one. Sean Devin dished two assists. Jack Gallant tallied 15 saves.
“We made a late rally but it was too many mistakes and too many lost battles against a really good goalie,” Jets coach Mike Roberts said.
The Jets (5-4-1) host Gloucester Saturday night (8).
Saugus 4, Beverly 4
The Sachems fell behind 3-0, but clawed their way back to take a 4-3 lead. Beverly scored a power play goal to tie it, but Saugus (4-5-3) held on for the point.
Nick Moore, Ryan Granara, Dante McGrane and John Torres scored for Saugus.
“We showed a lot of character coming all the way back, and we hope to carry that over,” Saugus coach Jeff Natalucci said. Saugus takes on North Reading Monday.
Medford 2, Marblehead 1
The Magicians led 1-0 going into the third, but a power play goal early in the period and another Medford goal with 1:09 left allowed the Mustangs to complete the come-from-behind win.
Catholic Memorial 4, St. John’s Prep 1
The Eagles allowed three goals in the third period. David Sacco was the lone goal scorer for the Prep, while Ryan Bradley and Brian Carrabes each had one assist.
BOYS TRACK
Danvers 55, Everett 31
Jack Brown was a double-winner for Danvers, taking the high jump (5-8) and the 55 hurdles (8.7). Danvers also got wins from Lance Ledesma in the shot put (42-4), Anthony Spignese in the 300 (39.3), Kevin Jordan in the 600 (1:43.7), Jeremy Hilton in the one-mile (5:06.1) and Liam Breen in the two-mile (10:33.7).
Everett got wins from Harchdy Souffrance in the 55 dash (6.5) and Aiman Salih in the 1000 (2:55.9).
Lynn English 47, Medford 38
The Bulldogs just edged out Medford by winning five of the nine events. Juan Avelino won both the high jump (5-8) and the 55 hurdles (9.0) to lead the way for English, while Jonson Ngandjui won the 600 (1:40.8), Adnan Jalal won the 1000 (2:57.9) and Abrar Jalal won the two-mile (10:55.5).
Medford got wins from Matthew Santiago in the shot put (33-1), Tristen Howard in the 55 dash (6.7), Andre Franco in the 300 (43.0) and Marcos Marciel in the one-mile (5:06.7).
GIRLS TRACK
Danvers 55, Everett 31
Danvers got wins from Skaina Pierre in the shot put (26-1/2), Skye Lovell in the 55 hurdles (10.0), Elodie Poussard in the 300 (47.8), Julie Kee in the 600 (1:51.8), Olivia Viel in the 1000 (3:44.7), Gabrielle Sherrick in the one-mile (6:18.1) and Becky Henion in the two-mile (13:26.8).
The two wins for Everett came from Nathalie Douyon in the high jump (4-9) and Jessica Santos in the 55 dash (7.7).
Medford 66, Lynn English 14
The Mustangs were led by double-winner Katiah Scott, who took the high jump (4-4) and the 55 dash (7.9). Other winners for Medford were Mya Winslow in the 55 hurdles (10.4), Chrystie Clervil in the 300 (47.2), Sophie Metais in the 600 (2:08.8), Lauren Brown in the 1000 (3:37.2), Julia Galebach in the one-mile (6:42.6) and Drexel Osborne in the two-mile (16:36.1).
The lone win for English came from Kahlee Smith-Whelton in the shot put (29-6 3/4).
SWIMMING
Northeast 97, Tech 81
Despite the loss, 80 percent of Tech swimmers logged personal best times. Tech swept the diving, with Vivanny Ortega winning the event with a score of 167.18. Luis Hernandez and Allyssa Shaw completed the sweep.
Jin Purdy swam to a win and personal best in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:22.16), and two relay teams, the 200 medley (Oliver Brooks, Purdy, Dustin Bloom and Trevor Powers) and the 200 freestyle (Hernandez, Jacob Levine, Powers and Liam Donovan).
Finally, Sheli Garcia, a first-year swimmer, swam to a third-place finish in the 100 butterfly.
