The St. John’s Prep wrestling team continued its run of dominance on Monday afternoon with a big 40-28 win over BC High in a Catholic Conference matchup. The win keeps the Eagles undefeated in the Catholic Conference (3-0) and puts them at 24-4 on the season.
Winners for the Prep were Nick Curley at 106 pounds, Quinn Alexander at 126 pounds, Ryan Garlitz at 132 pounds, Zach Alexander at 138 pounds, Tim Galvin at 145 pounds and Ben Shaw at 160 pounds. In the heavier divisions, Drew Leahy got the win at 182 pounds and Chad Barnes-Felix won at 285 pounds.
St. John’s Prep will host Catholic Memorial Wednesday.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Saugus 64, Northeast 47
Freshman Mason Nickolas led the Sachems to their second win of the season with a team-high 19 points. Vinny Cirami, Mike Mabee and Joe Lusso each added 13 points in the win.
Saugus (2-7) will play Lynn Classical this evening.
Salem Academy 69, Phoenix Academy Lawrence 39
Four Navigators were in double figures on the evening. Qasim El-Akshar logged a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Ryan LeClare led the team in scoring with 13 points. Ali Kachmer added 11 points and Joe Daoud tallied 10 points.
Salem Academy (9-3) will play Pioneer Charter I Wednesday.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Archbishop Williams 51, St. Mary’s 38
Junior guard Pamela Gonzalez scored 21 points to lead the way for the Spartans in a Catholic Central League loss at Williams. Sophomore guard Gabby Torres added nine points.
“On the road against a top five team in the state, we needed to be at our best effort,” St. Mary’s coach Jeff Newhall said. “Although our effort was solid, we made too many mistakes.”
St. Mary’s (8-4) will host Arlington Catholic Friday night (6:30).
“We’ve been playing very well lately and still have a real good season going,” Newhall said. “We need to keep the momentum going in the right direction and get to work preparing for Arlington Catholic on Friday.”
BOYS HOCKEY
Woburn 3, Marblehead 1
Mike Kagan scored the lone goal for the Magicians on assist from his brother, Dan Kagan. Marblehead (1-8-3) faces another tough test on Wednesday when the Magicians take on the first-place Danvers Falcons in a Northeastern Conference matchup at Bourque Arena in Beverly.
North Reading 6, Saugus 0
The Sachems dropped to 4-6-3 with the loss. Saugus will play on the road against Peabody at McVan/O’Keefe Memorial Rink on Friday night.
BOYS TRACK
Swampscott 72, Lynn English 14
Behind double-winner Joe Varghese, the Big Blue rolled to a big win at home. Varghese won both the high jump (5 feet, 10 inches) and the 55-meter hurdles (8.5 seconds). Other winners for Swampscott were Dave Quill in the shot put (43-4), Najique Henry in the 55 dash (6.9), Connor Lynch in the 300 (41.4), Aidan Pulaski in the 600 (1:37.8), Will Fraser in the 1000 (2:55.9) and Pat Doucette in the two-mile (10:57.7). The win improves the Big Blue to 6-0 as they look to have an undefeated regular season.
The lone win for English (3-4) came from Abrar Jalal, who won the one-mile with a time of 4:50.3.
Malden 75, Gloucester 11
The Golden Tornadoes won all but one event in their victory. Ezra Kruckenberg won the high jump (5-10), Juan Ortega won the shot put (37-1), Marron Acheampong won the 55 hurdles (9.0), Wesley Pierre won the 55 dash (6.7), Eric Toh won the 300 (39.9), Robert Russo won the 1000 (3:01.3), Chris D’Entremont won the one-mile (4:59.0) and Kyle O’Brien won the two-mile (11:32.3). Malden improves to 6-1 with the win.
Gloucester’s only win came in the 600 from Kory Hurd with a time of 1:32.4. The Fishermen (0-7) have yet to find a win this winter.
GIRLS TRACK
Swampscott 73, Lynn English 12
Swampscott got wins from Charlotte Andrews in the high jump (4-8), Meredith Zimmer in the 55 hurdles (10.2), Alexandra Gladstone in the 55 dash (8.0), Molly Frauenholz in the 300 (48.0), Isabel Denham in the 600 (1:52.6), Ashley Marston in the 1000 (3:20.1), Amelia Groothuis in the one-mile (6:18.9) and Leonie Flackie in the two-mile (14:06.9). The Big Blue remain unbeaten at 6-0 after the win.
English’s lone win came from Kahlee Smith-Whelton in the shot put (31-1 1/2). The Bulldogs drop to 1-6 with the loss.
Malden 56, Gloucester 30
Malden won five of the nine events to edge out a close win over Gloucester. Shataeya Smith won the shot put (32-9 1/2), Rachel Eaglin won the 55 hurdles (9.0), Shaqora Wallace won the 55 dash (7.6), Jasmine Gray won the 1000 (3:22.7) and Kylie Dimaro won the one-mile (6:12.1). The Golden Tornadoes improve to 6-1 with the win.
Gloucester had one double-winner in Kaitlin Marques, who won the high jump (4-8) and the 300 (46.3). Other winners for Gloucester were Lila Olson in the 600 (1:50.2) and Aidan Cunningham in the two-mile (13:48.9). The Fishermen are now 2-5.
