Girls basketball: Rosa, Big Blue defeat English

After Swampscott and English ended the first half deadlocked at 20-20, the Big Blue girls basketball team held the Bulldogs to just nine second-half points to squeeze out a 34-29 victory at home on Tuesday night. Junior Nikki Rosa was the star of the night for Swampscott, recording a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The Big Blue (7-3) will travel to Revere for a tough matchup with the Patriots on Friday night.

For the Bulldogs, Ely Guity led the offense with 11 points and grabbed four rebounds. Stacy Abreu contributed with eight points and five rebounds.

English falls to 4-7 with the loss and aims to bounce back with a win on Thursday against Gloucester.

Lynn Tech 45, Chelsea 27

Michayla Lawrence was the top scorer on the night for the Tigers with 17 points. Arianna Anaya and Abby Aceto each had 12 points in the win.

Tech (4-8) will play Presentation of Mary Academy on Friday.

Bishop Fenwick 59, Lowell Catholic 36

Behind a double-double from senior captain Jennie Meagher, the Crusaders rolled to a big win at home. Meagher had 11 points and 10 rebounds and added three blocks, while senior Courtney Norton led the team in scoring with 14 points and added three steals. Junior captain Sammi Gallant had 11 points and five assists. Senior Fredi DeGuglielmo, still getting her feet under her after recently returning from injury, had a great all-around game with nine points, five rebounds and four steals.

Fenwick (7-5) will play on the road at Cathedral on Friday night.

Lynn Classical 52, Saugus 18

The Rams moved to 12-1 following a convincing win over Saugus on the road. Paris Wilkey returned to action and led the way with 17 points, while Irianis Delgado and Tyarah Horton each had nine points.

Classical will host Gloucester on Friday for its Alumni Night.

The Sachems were led by Molly Granara’s seven points and Alessia Salzillo’s six points. Meaghan Gannon, Jessica Nazzaro and Jillian Ricupero all played well on both sides of the ball. Saugus (5-5) will travel to Lynn English on Friday.

Peabody 70, Medford 38

Behind a big night from junior Catherine Manning, the Tanners earned their third win of the season to improve to 3-5. Manning logged a double-double with 24 points and 15 rebounds.

“Catherine’s the only remaining starter from last year’s team,” Peabody coach Stan McKeen said. “She does a great job around the basket and she’s able to draw fouls. She made eight of 13 free throw shots tonight.”

Kristina Rossignoll scored 11 points with four assists and Liz Zaiter added 10 points with eight rebounds.

“We’re moving the ball better,” McKeen said. “Tonight we did a good job moving the ball and making shots around the basket. Our defense has been good. It’s been the offense that’s been struggling but tonight we played well around the basket. Hopefully we’re turning the corner.”

The Tanners aim for a three-game win streak when they host Somerville on Friday night (7).

Revere 66, Winthrop 51

Valentina Pepic had a huge night for the Patriots with 31 points.The Patriots host Swampscott on Friday night (7).

Lynnfield 36, Ipswich 35

Mackenzie O’Neill (4 points) scored the Pioneers’ game-winning basket on an inbounds play from Lizzie Shaievitz with 1.5 seconds left  to steal a win at Ipswich. The win was the second this season for Lynnfield.  

Tori Morelli had a monster game with 16 points, 12 rebounds, three steals and two blocks, while Shaievitz finished with 12 points and four rebounds and hit two threes.
