All five of the Marblehead boys basketball team’s starters scored in double-figures to fend off a late Danvers rally and grab a 73-58 win on Friday night.
Derek Marino led the Magicians with 18 points and eight rebounds. Dewey Millett scored a career-high 15 points, Dan Doherty added 13, Sean McCarthy totalled 12 and Seamus Keaney finished with 11.
Danvers’ Justin Roberto led all scorers with 20 points.
Marblehead (7-5) hosts Winthrop Tuesday.
“We have three tough games coming up,” Magicians coach Mike Giardi said. “We’re playing Winthrop, Peabody and then Medford in a makeup game on Super Bowl Sunday. The key for us is to focus on Winthrop right now.”
Classical 64, Gloucester 52
Edwin Solis scored 23 points, Dyrrell Rucker finished with 15 and Jeff Barbosa added nine points, seven rebounds and four steals.
The Rams (9-3) have won three in a row and visit Malden Tuesday.
Tech 45, PMA 30
Tre Baldwin scored nine points, Johan Ortega added eight points and Buba Ceesay totalled seven points. Tech (8-5) visits Greater Lowell Tuesday.
“It was a good win,” Tech coach Stevie Patrick said. “It wasn’t our biggest test but it was a good win. We’re onto the next game. We’re one step closer to another CAC Small championship and one step closer to the state tournament.”
English 81, Saugus 38
Saugus’ Jake Morgante logged a double-double at 12 points and 14 rebounds. Mason Nickolas scored nine points.
Saugus (2-9) visits Medford Tuesday.
“I’m really impressed with the way Antonio Anderson has coached his team,” Saugus coach Mark Bertrand said. “His kids are very respectful and he’s done a great job at English. I have nothing but great things to say about him and his team.”
English saw four players in double-figures.
“We played great team ball tonight,” Bulldogs coach Antonio Anderson said.
English (11-1) hosts Revere Tuesday.
St. Mary’s 61, Arlington Catholic 49
A big night from Chibuikem Onwuogu (20 points, 12 rebounds) propelled St. Mary’s to the win. Jalen Echevarria contributed with 11 points.
The Spartans (11-1) visit Haverhill Monday.
Swampscott 59, Revere 53
Big Blue coach Justin Fucile returned to the sidelines as his team earned its third win.
Swampscott’s Jackson Byrne led the way with 20 points, including four 3-pointers. Jake McIntire added 13 points. The Big Blue forced 11 turnovers with a high-pressure defense in the first half.
Swampscott (3-7) visits Everett Tuesday.
Cathedral 81, Fenwick 58
The Crusaders fell to 3-10 but saw solid performances from their three captains. Nik Pignone scored 20 points, Jack Keenan shot six-for-eight from the 3-point mark to add 18 points and Jack Bowers scored 15 points with six rebounds.
Somerville 58, Peabody 52
Jake Irvine scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds, Chris Canela added nine points and Avian Hernandez scored eight points with eight rebounds and three assists.
The Tanners (7-5) host Salem Tuesday.
“Next week’s a tough week for us,” Peabody coach Thad Broughton said. “We have Salem and Marblehead next week and those are two tough teams.”
St. John’s Prep 87, Catholic Memorial 84
Matt Relihan and Nate Hob led the Eagles with 21 and 20 points, respectively. St. John’s (9-3) hosts Central Catholic Sunday (2).
Masconomet 70, Lynnfield 67
Lynnfield’s Zach Shone led all scorers with 22 points, while Billy Arseneault scored 18. Senior Matt Mortellite also hit double figures with 10 points.
“We absolutely, positively, 100 percent gave this game away,” said Lynnfield coach Scott MacKenzie. “We got incredibly soft at the end of the game and that was it. We got beaten on offensive rebounds off free throws. We got tossed around a little in that first quarter and we did better in the third quarter, but we just stopped playing tough, we stopped playing hard at the end.”
Malden 85, Winthrop 79
Tayjuan McKenzie scored 25 points, Devin Pulsifer added 24 and Chrono Washington tallied 10.
“We played really well tonight,” Vikings (4-8) coach David Sacco said. “I couldn’t be happier with our effort. It was a great high school basketball game where kids were making play after play. My guys are so resilient, battling some of the top teams in Eastern Mass. night after night. Game like this will only make us better.”
Beverly 68, Salem 64
Nate Lebron scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds, Isaiah Williamson added 16 points and Ethan Espinal scored 10.
Salem (7-5) visits Burke Monday.
“We lost at the buzzer the first time we played them,” Salem coach Tom Doyle said. “They’re still undefeated so hopefully we can knock them off and get a win.”
South Shore 45, Salem Academy 39
Ali Kachmer scored 11 points with 10 rebounds and Ryan LeClare scored seven points.
