Lynn Jets senior captain Mike Clougherty continued his strong season Saturday, logging a hat trick and adding an assist to lead Lynn to a 6-1 win over Everett.
John DiFilippo also had a huge game with five points (two goals and three assists), while Brian Clougherty had one goal and three assists. Sean Devin had two assists in the win.
Lynn (7-4-2) is now in solid position to qualify for the state tournament, only needing four more points over its final seven games. The quest for those points continues on Wednesday when the Jets host St. Joseph’s Prep at Connery (5).
Newburyport 3, St. Mary’s 1
Two quick goals for Newburyport in the final minute of the first period put the Spartans in an early hole, and they weren’t able to climb all the way back, despite outshooting the Clippers by a hefty margin. Anthony Bono scored St. Mary’s lone goal.
The Spartans are still one point away from a state tournament berth after falling to a strong Newburyport team at Graf Rink on Saturday. Now at 8-3-3 on the year, St. Mary’s will try to grab that qualifying point Wednesday when the Spartans travel to Stoneham Arena to take on Matignon.
Swampscott 5, Somerville 1
Swampscott coach Gino Faia said after Wednesday’s tie with the Jets that his team needs to start winning games if the Big Blue want to make the state tournament. That message was received as Swampscott rolled to to a win over Somerville Saturday to earn two crucial points.
Steve Santanello led the way with two goals, and Dom Codispoti added a goal and two assists, good for 50 career points in a Big Blue uniform. Jack Poska added a goal and assist, Conor Donovan had one goal, Drew Olivieri had three assists and Thomas O’Keefe and Brett Benoit each had one assist.
Now at 6-4-5, the Big Blue need just three more points for a tournament spot with five games to go. Swampscott will take on Peabody at McVann-O’Keefe Wednesday.
Lynnfield 4, Amesbury 3
Tyler Murphy netted the game-winning goal with just 8.8 seconds left on the clock to lift the Pioneers to yet another victory in the Cape Ann League on Saturday. George Deroche, Cooper Marengi and John Simonetti each added a goal in the win.
The Pioneers (9-2-1) are now just one point away from qualifying for the state tournament, but they have a tough test up next in CAL powerhouse Newburyport at Graf Rink Saturday.
Beverly 4, Marblehead 1
Beverly qualified for the tournament for the first time in four years after a convincing win over Northeastern Conference foe Marblehead Saturday. Paul Edson and Conor Hanlon led the way with a goal and assist each, while Tim McCarthy and Aaron Carroll each had one goal. Ryan Munzing added two assists.
The Panthers (9-4-3) host Danvers Wednesday at Bourque Arena.
Marblehead’s lone goal came from Jacob Garfield on an assist from Will Bosworth. The Magicians (1-10-3) visit Winthrop Wednesday.
Malden Catholic 5, Mount St. Charles (R.I.) 0
The Lancers got a goal and assist from Jerry Bazile as Malden Catholic shut out their visitors from Rhode Island Saturday. Bernie Gillis, Kyle Furey and Antonio Colella each had one goal in the win, while Matthew Johnston earned the shutout in net.
Malden Catholic (4-6-2) will take on the top team in the state, Central Catholic, tonight in Salem, N.H.
St. John’s Prep 2, Xaverian 2
The Eagles gave up the tying goal to Xaverian twice before settling for a draw in a Catholic Conference matchup Saturday. Brian Carrabes and Zack McKennelly had the goals for St. John’s, while Cam Ludwig had 27 saves in net.
With eight games still on the schedule, the Prep (7-3-2) needs just four more points to punch a tournament ticket. The Eagles will play Bishop Guertin tonight in Tyngsborough.
Gloucester 6, Revere 2
The Fishermen clinched the NEC South for the third time in four years. The win also clinches a tournament berth for Gloucester.
EJ Field had two goals to pace the Gloucester offense, while Ethan Brennan had a goal and two assists. John Mondello, James Vandala and Ryan Parisi each scored one goal in the win. The Fishermen (8-3-3) will travel to Veterans Memorial Rink on Saturday for a road game against Somerville.
Revere got goals from Mike Giordano and Zach Rufo in the loss. It’s turning into crunch time for the Patriots (7-6-2), who need four points in their final five games to grab a tournament spot. They will host Lynn at Cronin Rink Saturday.
Bishop Fenwick 7, St. Peter Marian 2
Derek DelVecchio’s two goals and Matt Moniz’s first career varsity goal were some of the highlights of Fenwick’s dominat win over St. Peter Marian on Saturday. Ian Worthley, Tom Estella, Nick Muzi and Kasey O’Brien also scored goals for the Crusaders, while Will Foglietta had one assist.
Fenwick (3-8-3) will host St. Mary’s at McVann-O’Keefe Memorial Rink on Saturday.
Medford 5, Winthrop 2
The Mustangs punched their ticket to the tournament with the win on Saturday. Medford (8-3-2) will travel to Saugus for a game at Kasabuski Rink on Wednesday.
Winthrop is still very much alive in terms of qualifying for the tournament, needing five points in its final seven games. The Vikings will host Marblehead at Larsen Arena on Wednesday.
SWIMMING
Fenwick 91, St. Mary’s 71
Fenwick had three double-winners on the day in Catherine Christuk, Rowan Emerson and Sophia Lumino. Christuk won both the 100 breaststroke (1:11.50) and the 200 individual medley (2:16.94), Emerson took the 100 freestyle (56.75) and the 200 freestyle (2:10.12) and Lumino won the 50 freestyle (26.28) and the 100 butterfly (1:06.19). The Crusaders also got individual wins from Emily DelBene in the 100 backstroke (1:15.72) and the 500 freestyle (6:48.72).
The Crusaders swept the three relay events, with the team of Christuk, Emerson, Sarah Long and Sabrina Botthof winning the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:58.87, the team of Emerson, DelBene, Lumino and Conor Hinchey winning the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:51.59 and the team of Christuk, Botthof, Long and DelBene winning the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 4:23.94.
This Saturday, Feb. 3, Fenwick travels to the 18th annual Catholic Central League Meet at Simmons College in Boston, which has now been renamed the Cara A. Buckwell Memorial Swimming & Diving Championships. The league has decided to name the tournament in honor of Bishop Fenwick’s former swim coach Cara Buckwell, who passed away this past summer after a brief and difficult battle with lung cancer.
The Crusaders close out the regular season at 6-1.
GIRLS HOCKEY
Peabody 4, Marshfield 4
It was Jen Flynn’s late goal that forced a draw for the Tanners on Saturday. Sammie Mirasolo added two goals, while Jess Robert had one goal and one assist and Sarah Buckley had three assists. Goalie Jeny Collins had 24 saves.
Peabody (6-5-2) will take on Medford on Wednesday at LoConte Rink.
