The Swampscott boys hockey team picked up an 8-0 win at Peabody on Wednesday evening. The Big Blue featured five different goal scorers. Dominic Codispoti (two goals), Brett Benoit (two goals), Drew Olivieri (two goals, one assist), Stevie Santanello (one goal, five assists) and Conor Donovan (one goal, one assist) each found the back of the net. Zach Elwell dished out two assists while Jack Poska and Thomas O’Keefe each logged one assist.
In net, goalie Dan Johnson tallied 21 saves to earn the shutout victory.
“I thought it was a good win for us, on the road in Peabody,” Swampscott coach Gino Faia said. “We played three solid periods and it gets us that much closer to states.”
Swampscott (7-4-5) visits Everett Saturday. The Big Blue need one point to earn a state tournament berth.
St. Mary’s 2, Matignon 2
At Matignon, the Spartans surrendered a late goal and settled for the tie. St. Mary’s aims to bounce back with a win Saturday evening (6) when the Spartans visit CCL foe Bishop Fenwick.
Winthrop 2, Marblehead 1
At Winthrop’s Larsen Rink, the lone Marblehead goal was scored by Stephen Pappas in the third period. The Vikings held on in the final minutes for the close win. The Magicians host Saugus Saturday at Salem State.
BOYS BASKETBALL
KIPP 52, Pioneer 46
At Everett, the Panthers bounced back from a close loss last Friday by defeating a scrappy PCSS team.
Leading all scorers was Dominic Jette with 16 points. Behind Jette, junior Abdoul Barry put together another strong game with 10 points.
With Phoenix Chelsea forfeiting to KIPP Tuesday night, the Panthers are 10-1 in the MCSAO North. KIPP plays Phoenix Lawrence Friday (5).
Revere 71, Saugus 40
The Patriots notched their first win thanks to some balanced scoring. Sebastian Vanegas, EJ Leone, John Leone and Scott Montefusco each contributed 12 points.
Revere (1-10) takes on Salem Friday.
GIRLS HOCKEY
Peabody 3, Medford 1
The Tanners (7-5-2) returned to their winning ways to pull within four points of clinching their second straight tournament berth.
Goalie Abby Buckley made 20 saves to earn the win.
Paige Thibedeau (from Sammie Mirasolo) got the Tanners on the board with 16 seconds left in the first period. The Tanners scored two goals in the second period to bump the lead to 3-0. Mirasolo got the game-winner (from Thibedeau and Cassie Mirasolo), then Jen Flynn added a short-handed goal (unassisted) a few minutes later.
“Medford popped one in towards the end of the second when we didn’t clear it,” said Peabody coach Michelle Roach. “But Abby played really well and Mae Norton and Kaydee Purcell, the seniors back on the blue, set the tone for us and kept it together. Up front, Jen had an excellent game. Overall, everything was looking good tonight.”
