School Roundup: Spartans take down BC High

In what St. Mary’s boys hockey coach Mark Lee dubbed a “David vs. Goliath” type of game, the Spartans fought hard for a full 45 minutes to earn a 3-2 win over BC High at UMass Boston’s Clark Center on Tuesday night. The game-winning goal was scored by Anthony Bono, who scored with just 47 seconds left in regulation.

“This was one of the best games I’ve seen a St. Mary’s team play, said Lee. “BC High is such a good team, and they’re all huge and play a very physical game. Our guys went toe-to-toe with them for all 45 minutes and pulled out a hard-fought two points.”

Nick Napolitano led St. Mary’s in scoring with one goal and two assists, while Colin Reddy had one goal and one assist. Davis Kinne added an assist. Goalie Kevin McMullen stood tall in net all night, stopping 29 shots.

The Spartans took a 2-0 lead into the second period, but BC High slowly chipped away with a goal in the second period before tying the score with 2:45 remaining in the game. But as the final minute of the game ticked away, Reddy got released from the penalty box, took a pass from Napolitano and fired a pass right to Bono, who flipped a shot into the back of the net for the eventual game-winner.

The win marks the first time St. Mary’s has beaten the Eagles, who are the No. 2-ranked team in Massachusetts this season. Lee hopes that will give the Spartans momentum going into the state tournament.

“We’re still a young team, so this is a pretty big win,” Lee said. “Accomplishing a win like this will hopefully give the younger guys that confidence that they can play with anybody out there. This is why we schedule teams like BC High during the regular season, to prepare for the tournament.”

St. Mary’s hosts Archbishop Williams Saturday.

GIRLS HOCKEY

St. Mary’s 5, Beverly 0

Spartans goalie Lauren Vaccaro earned the shutout win. Aylah Cioffi notched a hat trick and Codi Butt added a pair of goals in the win. St. Mary’s (13-2) hosts Arlington Catholic Saturday (6:30) for the Spartans’ senior night.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Peabody 63, Winthrop 39

The Tanners had their best shooting performance of the season, hitting nine 3-pointers in a big win over Winthrop. Colleen Crotty, who hit four of those threes, finished with 16 points, while Liz Zaiter had a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Kristina Rossignol added eight points and six rebounds in the win.

Peabody (6-7) will try to get back to .500 in a make-up game against Everett on Thursday.

Archbishop Williams 53, Bishop Fenwick 38

Jaxson Nadeau led the Crusaders with nine points and six rebounds, while Sammi Gallant added eight points and three steals. Courtney Norton had seven points and six rebounds.

Fenwick (8-7) will try to get back on track against Arlington Catholic on Friday.

Everett 61, Marblehead 37

Hannah Garthe led the way with seven points and two steals, while Maddy Lowy contributed five points. Emily Clough had a big day on the boards with 12 rebounds. Madi Ernst and Brigette Gable also played well.

The Magicians close out the season with four road games, starting tonight at Swampscott.

Malden 35, Saugus 31

Alessia Salzillo scored 10 points and Allie Kotkowski scored nine. Marissa Stockwell led the defense.

“I thought we played good defense collectively,” Saugus coach Mark Schruender said. “As a group, we did what we had to do on the defensive end. We just couldn’t make shots, unfortunately.”

Saugus (8-7) visits Swampscott Friday night (7).

Classical 50, Danvers 47

Paris Wilkey led Classical with 18 points, while Jeylly Medrano and Irianis Delgado scored 10 each.

“Danvers is a 2-loss team and we went into their building,” Rams coach Tom Sawyer said. “They posed a matchup problem for us because of their size. To come out of there with a win was great. I couldn’t be prouder of our team.”

Classical (16-1) hosts Marblehead Friday (7) for the Rams’ senior night.

Somerville 46, Swampscott 38

Katie Watts led the Big Blue with 11 points and Nikki Rosa finished with 10. Swampscott hosts Marblehead tonight (7).
