Revere Police will take the polar plunge to support the Special Olympics

report

February 23, 2018 by report

REVERE — Police officers are gearing up to celebrate the Special Olympics in the coolest way possible – by taking the Polar Plunge at Revere Beach on Saturday, Mar. 3.

Officers are fundraising in the community to raise much-needed funds and resources for more than 12,000 Special Olympics athletes around the state.

“We are proud to support Special Olympics through this event,” Revere Police Chief James Guido said in a press release. “We encourage everyone to consider joining this worthy cause.”

To support the Revere Police plunge team with a donation or by registering as a plunger on their team visit www.ReverePlunge.Kintera.org and clicking “View All Teams.”

“We would like to thank the Revere Police Department for their participation and support for the Special Olympics,” said Revere Mayor Brian Arrigo.

Special Olympics Massachusetts has been able to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-style sports to over 12,000 adults and children with intellectual disabilities across the state for the past fifty years because of community partners like the Law Enforcement Torch Run, according to the release.

The run is an international charity made up of law enforcement officers that raises funds and increases awareness for Special Olympics.

Polar Plunge is one of the run’s signature fundraising events. A polar plunge is a winter fundraising challenge whereby individuals or teams “plunge” into a cold body of water in order to raise money for Special Olympics. Each participant collects donations from family, friends and businesses in hopes of raising lots of money for their local Special Olympics communities. In 2017, more than 1,000 individuals took the plunge in Pittsfield, Sharon, Marlborough, Hull, Revere and other towns, raising over $400,000 for Special Olympics Massachusetts.
