State Senate election Tuesday

LYNN — Two years after former City Councilor Daniel Cahill ran unopposed for a seat in the Legislature, state Rep. Brendan Crighton is about to do the same.

On Tuesday, Crighton will be the only name on the ballot as he seeks the Third Essex District seat in the state Senate. It  became vacant when former Sen. Thomas M. McGee was sworn in as mayor in January.

While Paul Crowley, CEO of Greater Lynn Senior Services, and former Mayor Judith Flanagan Kennedy, a Republican, flirted with the idea of running, they failed to file signatures by deadline.

As a result, Crighton, a Lynn Democrat, is the only choice. Voters can still write in a name for the Third Essex District which includes Lynn, Lynnfield, Marblehead, Nahant, Saugus, and Swampscott.

“I am very excited,” Crighton said. “We’ve run a very active campaign since Nov. 8 after Tom won. We have a busy schedule leading up until Tuesday and we will continue to meet voters and then get ready to do the job.”

The race to succeed Crighton in the 11th Essex District House seat, which includes West Lynn and Nahant, has three candidates, including Ward 6 City Councilor Peter Capano, Drew Russo, executive director of the Lynn Museum, and City Councilor-at-Large Hong Net.
