LYNN — Champions from four different schools were crowned this past weekend in the 41st Lynn elementary boys and girls basketball tournament at Pickering Middle School.
Saturday’s semifinal rounds kicked off with Callahan taking on Ingalls in Division 1 boys action. Callahan secured the 37-20 victory behind a balanced offensive attack that saw seven players, including Kameron Rucker (12) and Isac Medina (8 points) score. Ingalls’ Canei McLeod scored 10 and Louis Ledesma and Alex Cepeda both had 3 points.
With the win, Callahan advanced to Sunday’s final against Ford. Despite being down by two points at the half, Callahan rode a late-half surge from Rucker (15) and Medina (11) to claim the 32-20 victory.
Eddy Garcia and Travis Sanchez were Ford’s high scorers with 9 and 7 points, respectively.
In Division 1 girls play, Drewicz defeated Harrington 14-10 in Saturday’s semifinals. Keisha Perez put the team on her back, scoring all 14 for Drewicz. Jayleen Novas and Camila Rufinos were the high scorers for Harrington.
Drewicz moved on to Sunday’s final against Ingalls — its third game in as many days. In the end, the Dolphins stayed hot to capture the title, were able to capture the title, 19-5. Perez had the hot hand again, with 15 points and Kimberly Boyd also scored for Drewicz. Ingalls’ high scorers were Nallelie Acevedo and Angellenny Perez.
Saturday’s final two games decided who would play in Sunday’s Division 2 boys final. First up, Lynn Woods, coming off the tournament’s biggest upset, took on Washington. Unfortunately for the Wolves, their Cinderella run came to an end as they fell 35-29. Washington’s Denzell Guillen led the team with 11 points and teammate Anthony Quintero had 10. Lynn Woods’ Sam Junta led all scorers with 14 and Marvin L’Italien Avery chipped in 12 points in the loss.
Washington advanced to the D2 championship against Sewell-Anderson, which pulled off a nail biting, 19-17 win over Lincoln-Thomson. Sewell had seven players score including Jaiden Driscoll, Richie Avery and Matt Sisson. Lincoln’s Davante Taggart turned in another fantastic performance scoring a game-high 11 points.
In Sunday’s final, Washington took home the championship with a 30-15 win. Guillen had a game-high 9 points while teammates Jarrod Allen (8) and Isander Beauschamp (6) also scored. Ryan Amirault, Jacob Gilbert and Kyle Hartzell were among the scorers for Sewell.
The Division 2 girls championship came down to the wire with Sisson eking out the 3-point victory, 16-13. over previously undefeated Sewell-Anderson. Brooke Moloney had 12 for the Eagles and Andrilee Amely Carmenatty also scored. Neveah Eth had seven and Jomary Lora, four in the loss.
On Friday, March the divisional winners will compete in The second Annual Lynn City Championship. The Drewicz girls will take on Sisson at 5: p.m. with Callahan playing the Washington boys at 6:30. Saturday, the tournament’s best players will compete in the fifth annual Lynn Elementary Tournament All Star Games, pitting East Lynn vs West Lynn. The girls play at noon with the boys game to follow at 2:30 p.m.
