One seat up for grabs on Nahant planning board

Bridget Turcotte

April 1, 2018 by Bridget Turcotte

Residents will hit the polls on April 28, and while most races are uncontested, there’s a spike in interest in the Planning Board.

Alison Ackerman, John S. Bianchi, and Edward Goodrich are all vying for one seat on the board. The spot was formerly taken by Bianchi, who was elected last year on a write-in campaign, but later resigned, said Town Clerk Margaret Barile.

Bianchi is trying to take back the seat, but is now up against Ackerman and Goodrich.

Thomas Donahue, another member, elected to step down before his term expired. Eugene Canty is running to take his spot for a one-year term, said Barile.

Last year, members Edward Tarlov and Tony Roossien announced they would not run for reelection. Mirjana R. Maksimovic was appointed in 2016, and her name was the only one to appear on the ballot. The town was left to depend on write-in candidates to fill the remaining seats.

Margaret Barile, Selectman Enzo Barile, and Town Moderator David Conlin are running

for re-election unopposed. Perry Barrasso is running for a three-year term as assessor, Robert Scanlan, Jr. for a one-year term as constable, and Mickey Long for a five-year term on the Housing Authority. Each is running unopposed.

There’s an open seat for a three-year term on the Nahant Public Library Board of Trustees, which nobody is running for.

Lauren M. Sherlock is seeking re-election to the School Committee, and newcomer Thomas J. Tria is vying for the other open seat vacated by Kerri McKinnon. Sherlock was chosen to fill the seat vacated by former member Michael Quigley in July 2017, when he moved to Swampscott.

Absentee ballots will be made available upon request, said Barile, and residents who have not yet registered to vote can do so next week.

The Board of Registrars will hold a voter registration for anyone who is not presently registered, wishes to make a party change, or update their name or address on Friday, April 6 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Identification will be required.

Polls will be open on Saturday, April 28 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

On the same day, Town Meeting will commence at 12:30 p.m. at Town Hall.

A quorum of 75 people will be required.
