The Lynn Classical girls tennis team opened up the 2018 season with a quality win over Northeastern Conference foe Somerville, 4-1, on Monday afternoon. The Rams earned two singles wins and two doubles wins on the day.
Shanelle Barry got the winning started in second singles, taking her match, 6-2, 7-5. Daphne Pineda followed with a win in third singles, 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles play, the team of Abby Stafford and Lexi Ferraro got a win in the first match, 6-1, 6-2, while the team of Cindy Roberts and Cathy Nguyen earned the win in second singles, 6-4, 6-3.
Classical (1-0) will travel to Winthrop for a match against the Vikings on Wednesday.
GIRLS TENNIS
Marblehead 5, Swampscott 0
Coach Nina Rogers said the second doubles match between Cahill and Cannan Whittier and the Big Blue’s’ Molly Frauenholz and Olivia Fulgham was the highlight of the day, as it went three sets, with the Magician duo winning 6-4, 6-7 and 10-8 in a tiebreaker.
“They were just a stronger team,” Rogers said.
“We picked up right where we left off last season, playing with confidence and consistency,” said Marblehead coach Tracey Ackerman.
At first singles Michelle Sub beat Anne Cilley, 6-1, 6-0; at second, Hannah Porath beat Lily Sanphy 6-2, 6-2; and at third, Lisa Krebs, an exchange student from Germany, beat Gina Hollenbach, 6-1, 6-2.
In first doubles, Mandy DuMais-Simone Likterov defeated Rachel Weiss-Georgia Cilly, 6-1, 6-0
Arlington Catholic 4, St. Mary’s 1
Madison Desmond won at second singles 6-4, 6-4. St. Mary’s next match is today against Lowell Catholic. The Spartans are 0-2.
BOYS TENNIS
Revere 3, Peabody-Danvers 2
The newly-merged Peabody-Danvers program suffered a setback in its first match in a tight game with the Patriots.
Revere won at third singles with Riaz Butt (6-4, 6-2), and at both first and second doubles with Eric Meza-Alejandro Zuleta (6-1, 6-4) and Wellan Sok-Sidarong Men (6-0, 6-2).
The Tanners got wins from Paul Neal at first singles (6-0, 6-0) and Alex Nadeau at second singles (6-1, 6-1).
Somerville 4, Lynn Classical 1
Stephen Ong won at second singles (1-6, 7-5, 7-6) for Classical’s only win.
The Rams face Winthrop Thursday.
Lowell Catholic 3, Bishop Fenwick 2
The Crusaders, in their first match of the season, got wins at first (Noah Anderson-Regan Bju, 6-4, 6-1) and second (Paul Papageorgiou-Rinniel Javonillo, 6-7, 6-2, 8-6) doubles.
“We had some outstanding performances,” Fenwick coach Greg LaBelle said. “We just came up short.”
Fenwick is at home Thursday against Spellman.

The Magicians swept the doubles matches and won two singles matches to earn the win over the Big Blue on Monday. In first singles Billy Ackerman got the win, 6-2, 6-0, while David Grenader won in second singles, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5). In doubles play, the team of Adam Sherf and Tony Gluski fought for a tough win in their match, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, and the team of Jack Quigley and Mason Friedman won the second match, 6-4, 6-3.
Justin Ratner earned the lone win for the Big Blue, taking his third singles match in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).
