SAUGUS — A magician and his family of furry creatures gave local school kids the highlight of their spring break vacation.

Stephen ”The Magician” Brenner and his friends, Princess the Pig, Jack the Rabbit, a chinchilla, a pair of doves, and a gecko put on a magic show for the young Saugus students on Wednesday. The event took place in a packed room of about 80 kids and their parents at the Saugus Public Library.

“We just wanted to create a program for spring break so the kids could have something fun to do and I liked this performer because he had a lot of live animals as well as magic,” said Amy Melton, head of the Children’s Department at the library for the last two years.

Melton said this was the library’s first time working with Brenner and it is all thanks to a grant that was accepted by the Saugus Cultural Council in January. Brenner, a native of Brockton, has been doing magic shows for kids all over the state for 30 years. Before his passion for magic came about, Brenner spent most of his adult life doing charity work.

Brenner’s tricks and kid-friendly jokes caused uproars of laughter by students and even their parents to be heard throughout the library. The show’s big hit was definitely the free time given at the end for the kids to pet some of the pet therapy-trained animals, who live with Brenner in his Brockton home.

“I loved petting the bunny and all the animals, said 9-year-old Gisele Kazibwe of Saugus. “I have just been coming to the library and watching television during break, so this has definitely been the highlight of my vacation.”
