The bats came alive for the Big Blue on Monday afternoon as the Swampscott softball team earned a 15-12 win over Salem.
Katie Watts had the biggest bat on the day, going 4-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored. Riley Lord went 4-for-5 with three RBI, while Chloe Rukauskas went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Sydney Cresta went 3-for-5 with three runs scored.
On the mound, Caleigh Hopkins earned the mound after pitching the first four innings. Lord pitched the final three frames to earn the save.
Swampscott (2-4) will host Medford on Wednesday.
St. Mary’s 6, Spellman 5 (F/9)
At Spellman in nine innings, Marina DiBiasio helped the Spartans get a 6-4 lead after 6 1/2 innings, and then made a diving catch in the cap in the bottom of the seventh to preserve it.
“She’d have to be the star of this game,” said coach Paige Licata, “both at bat and in the field.’
St. Mary’s trailed 2-0 heading into the top of the fifth, and then tied it when DiBiasio knocked in two runs.
The Cardinals came back in the bottom of the fifth to score two more, but St. Mary’s tied it at 4-4 in the top of the seventh on hit by shortstop sam Porazinski, Alyssa Grossi and DiBiasio.
After a scoreless eighth, Jennie Iudice knocked in two runs in the top of the ninth to put St. Mary’s ahead, but Christina Nowicki, who pitched the last four innings, was able to hold the fort, thanks in good part to DiBiasio’s catch.
“I was proud of them today,” said Licata. “They came together as a group, both offensively and defensively.”
The Spartans, 2-3, are home Wednesday (4) against Matignon.
Gloucester 6, Saugus 5
At Saugus, in 13 innings, Saugus had a chance in the bottom of the 13th after Gloucester had scored the go-ahead run in the top of the winning on a sacrifice fly, but even though the Sachems got two runners on, the rally died.
“It was a good game,” said Saugus coach Steve Almquist. “We couldn’t do anything for almost half the game, but we came alive in the seventh.”
Gloucester had a 2-0 lead until the bottom of the seventh, when the Sachems, 2-4, scored twice.
“Then,” said Almquist, “they’d score and we’d score, until the 13th.”
Nystasia Rowe and Taylor Bogdanski were each 3-for-6 for Saugus, with Bogdanski getting a double and knocking in two runs.
Also, catcher D.J. Munafo was 4-for-6 with an RBI and Caitlyn Wood was 1-for-4 with two RBI.
Wood went all 13 innings, giving up 10 hits and striking out five.
“She was the hard-luck loser,” said Almquist. “She deserved a better fate.”

Salem Academy 14, Excel Academy 11
Crissy McLaughlin struck out eight batters in a complete-game effort for Salem Academy on Monday. Maddie Luciano led the offensive effort with a home run, three RBI and three runs scored.
The Navigators (5-1) will host Pioneer Charter I on Wednesday.
Beverly 13, Lynn English 1 (F/5)
Natalie Stilwell gave up only one hit and struck out 11 batters for Beverly in the win on Monday. Marlee Hamor led the offensive charge, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored, while Melanie Mason went 1-for-1 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Beverly is now 4-2.
BOYS LACROSSE
Lynn 5, Everett 4
The Jets earned their first win of the 2018 season behind a huge effort from first-year lacrosse player Alvin Chhim on Monday. Chhim scored his first career varsity goal in the game en route to his first career hat trick. Add to that his first career game-winning goal, which he scored with only a few minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
“It was a great game for Alvin, and really for the entire team,” said Jets coach Peter Pappagianopoulos. “The guys worked their butts off and gave a full effort, and it really showed out there today.”
Josue Matul and Jefferson Sok each added a goal in the win.
Lynn (1-6) will host Pope John this afternoon.
St. Mary’s 8, Cardinal Spellman 7 (OT)
Brendan Laundry netted the game-winner in overtime to lift St. Mary’s to a Catholic Central League win at Manning Field on Monday afternoon. Laundry finished as the Spartans’ high scorer on the day with three goals and one assist, while Nick Napolitano and Davis Kinne each added two goals and one assist. Joe O’Keefe had one goal and one assist and Jaiden Moriello had one assist. Goalie Kaden Quirk had 11 saves in the win, including three critical stops in overtime.
St. Mary’s (4-3) will play on the road at Archbishop Williams on Wednesday.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Peabody 15, Revere 4
The Tanners kept their unbeaten record intact on Monday afternoon with a big win. Sophomores Olivia Kiricoples and Colleen Crotty each had five goals and one assist to pace the Peabody offense, while senior Sarah Buckley had two goals and one assist. Sophomore Maddy Lomasney had two goals, freshman Amber Kiricoples had one goal and freshman Hailie Lomasney had two assists.
On the defensive side of the ball, junior Catherine Manning and freshmen Bridget O’Connell, Jordyn Collins and Aja Alimonte all played solid games. Freshman goalie Olivia LaValle had 10 saves in the win.
Peabody is now 6-0.
Cardinal Spellman 10, St. Mary’s 8
As Spartans coach KC Butt put it, “a perfect storm of bad things” led to a loss for St. Mary’s on Monday afternoon. Despite the setback, Codi Butt led the way with five goals and two assists. Mady Hentosh added two goals and three assists, while Meg Parthum had one goal and one assist.
St. Mary’s 3-6) will play Archbishop Williams on Wednesday.
BOYS TENNIS
Peabody 4, Lynn Classical 1
The lone winner for the Rams was the doubles team of Andy Ma and Jonathan Chase, who won their match 6-0, 6-3.

At Revere, Billy Ackerman beat David Phan at first singles, 6-2, 6-1;
David Grenader defeated Rinz Butt, 6-1, 6-4, at second; and Dan Litvak beat senior Alejandro Zuleta, 6-2, 6-0, in third.
Doubles it was Jack Curran-Edoardo Bernardis over beat Sidarong Men-Wellan Sok 6-0, 6-0; and Ben Birnbach-Harry Dolin over Hussain Alharbi-Matt Freitas, 6-0, 6-0

It was a clean sweep for the Big Blue on Monday, starting with a hard-fought win in first singles from Lily Sanphy (6-0, 1-6, 6-3). Gina Hollenbach (6-1, 6-0) and Kaseniya Yermakova (6-1, 6-0) added the other two singles wins, while the team of Rachel Weiss and Myriam Tshowa (6-2, 7-6, 7-1) and the team of Molly Frauenholz and Olivia Fulghum (6-0, 6-0) got the wins in doubles play.
Swampscott (3-2) has a match against Medford on Wednesday.
Marblehead 5, Revere 0
The Magicians got another great performance from first singles player Michelle Shub, who won her match 6-0, 6-0 to get the winning started on Monday. Lisa Krebs (6-0, 6-1) and Alix Livermore (6-4, 6-3) were the other singles winners for Marblehead.
In doubles play, the team of Mandy DuMais and Simone Likterov won their match 6-0, 6-0 and the team of Sara Weiss and Lizzy Potvin won their match, 6-1, 6-0.
Matignon 3, St. Mary’s 2
For St. Mary’s, Madison Desmond won at second singles, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1; and Jesse D’orsi and Sam Saunders took first doubles (6-4, 6-4).
The Spartans, 0-6, lost a close second-doubles match, with Tara Powers and Ellie Cappuccino falling, 4-6, 5-7.
St. Mary’s is back in action today against Bedford.
BOYS TRACK
Lynn English 77, Salem 59
The Bulldogs remained undefeated (4-0) as Juan Avelino and Samuel Adewale were double-winners.
Avelino won the high jump (5-10) and 100 (11.0) while Adewale took the discus (134-11) and 200 (23.3).
Other English winners were Matheus Montenario, long jump (18-8 3/4), Emil Rossi, shot put (43-1 3/4); Abrar Jalal, mile (4:50.5), and both the 4×100 (45.7) and 4×400 (4:01.2).
Classical 84, Medford 51
At Beverly, The Rams improved to 3-2. Dajon Wison was a double-winner, taking the triple jump (37-10.5) and 400 (53.5).
Other winners included Adam Washington, high jump (5-6); Elie Kalambaya, long jump, 19-6; Kevin Paniaqua, shot put (36-10.25); Samson Srey, javelin, 139-1; Ishmael Johnson, 400 hurdles (76.6); Ivan Melara, 800 (2:21.9), Mobolaji Fanimokun, mile (5:30.6); Junior Mejia, 2-mile (11:20.8); and both the 4×100 (48.7) and 4×400 (4:26.5).
“My distance runners and my jumpers really dominated,” said Classical coach Angel Melendez.
GIRLS TRACK
Lynn English 83, Salem 38
At Danvers, Emma Trahant won three events while Kahlee Smith-Whelton, Jackie Ramirez and Faidat Amisu took two each.
Trahant won the long jump (14-10 1/2), triple jump (28-11 1/2) and the 400 hurdles (78.9); while Smith-Whelton took the shot put (32-2 3/4) and javelin (8 1/2); and Amisu won the discus (60-10) and 200 (29.7). Ramirez won the 800 (3:02.3) and mile (6:33.5).
The other Bulldog winner was Lydia Igdnabovda, 400 (69.7).
English is 1-2.
Classical 75, Medford 61
At Beverly, Rachel Brennan and Chloe Kebreau were double winners for the 2-2 Rams. Kebreau won the 400 hurdles (1:24) and triple jump (32-6) and Brennan took the 2-mile (12:42) and 800 (2:40).
Classical also got wins from Paris Wilkey, javelin (69 feet), Ashley Calixte, discus (75-0) and Karen Plietez, shot put (23-2).
The Rams’ 4×400 relay team also won in 4:59.
