The Bishop Fenwick baseball team continued its hot start to the season with a 4-3 win over Cardinal Spellman in nine innings on Tuesday afternoon.
“Going down to Brockton’s always tough,” Fenwick coach Russ Steeves said. “It’s a long ride. Spellman played late Monday night so everyone was getting their feet underneath them for the first five innings. The rest of the game was a lot of fun. Back and forth.”
Crusaders starting pitcher David Furtado pitched all nine innings, allowing two earned runs and fanning three Spellman batters. With the win, Furtado’s 4-0 on the season.
Ethan Belt hit a RBI double and Nik Pignone hit a RBI triple to give Fenwick a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning. Tucker Destino led a ninth inning rally with a single and came home on a RBI single from Angelo McCullough. Keegan O’Connor laced a RBI double, scoring McCullough, to give Fenwick a 4-2 lead.
“Keegan’s batting around .650-.700 for the season,” Steeves said. “Ethan’s coming around. Tucker got a big hit for us in the ninth inning. It’s been a great team effort and it has to be.”
Spellman scored once in the bottom of the ninth but the Cardinals left runners on second and third as Furtado ended the game on a strikeout.
The Crusaders improved to 6-1 with the win. Fenwick hosts Williams Sunday (12).

The Crusaders took a 3-2 lead into the top of the fifth inning, but a five-run rally by Spellman led to a loss for Fenwick. Meredith McIntosh went 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI in the loss, while Maddie Csogi was 2-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored.

Fenwick (3-4) will play on the road at Matignon on Friday afternoon.

Danvers 14, Saugus 1 (F/5)

Things didn’t go as planned for the Sachems on Tuesday afternoon, as they only mustered two hits in a loss to Danvers at home. Sadie DiCenso had one of the hits, and her hit drove in the lone run on the day for Saugus. Caitlyn Wood added the other hit.

Saugus (2-5) will try to get back on the winning side of things on Thursday when it plays Lynn Classical.

Saugus (3-2) will play on the road at Cohasset this afternoon.

“I couldn’t be more proud of how the Marblehead team played and competed with first rate sportsmanship from both teams,” said Marblehead coach Elisabeth Foukal.

Despite the loss, St. Mary’s did have one bright spot on the day in first singles player Brady Ryan, who won his match 6-0, 6-1. Ryan controlled the match from start to finish, moving the ball all over the court akin to a player on the professional tour.
