The St. John’s Prep baseball team took down Catholic Conference rival Xaverian, 9-3 on Thursday afternoon at Brother Linus Complex.
With the win, St. John’s improved to 4-3 this spring. The Eagles had to string together a pair of late rallies to earn the victory, as St. John’s scored six runs in the final two innings to seal its win.
“Our kids wanted to play well and they did,” Eagles coach Dan Letarte said. “We had great pitching and timely hitting, which is something we haven’t been doing. We had some timely hits Saturday in the win over Walpole, so it’s a little carryover from that.”
Kevin Dewing got the start for the Eagles and threw 3 1/3 innings, allowing one earned run on five hits with three strikeouts. Sean Letarte pitched 3 2/3 of scoreless relief, logging one walk and one strikeout.
“Kevin pitched well. He ran into some trouble but it was a good outing,” Letarte said. “Sean got outs and let the offense do its job. He put us in a position to win and the bats came around.”
At the plate, Zeke O’Connell and Josh Cerretani powered St. John’s. O’Connell went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Cerretani went 4-for-4 with three RBI. Mike Yarin and Alex Lane each added one RBI.
“It’s good to see everybody hit well and pitch well,” Letarte said. “We’re starting to play our style of baseball, which I like.”
