DANVERS — The North Shore Chamber of Commerce will recognize 340 high school students for their top academic achievements during the 50th annual Honor Scholars Recognition Dinner on Tuesday.
The event will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel, at 50 Ferncroft Road. The night’s keynote speaker is Tim Collins, founder and CEO of EBSCO Information Services in Ipswich.
High school scholars who will be recognized include those from Lynn, Lynnfield, Peabody, Saugus and Swampscott. The North Shore Chamber honors students from 34 public and private high schools throughout the region.
Each honor scholar ranks in the top 5 percent of his or her graduating class and will be individually recognized before an anticipated audience of 1,000 parents, educators, scholars and community leaders.
According to the North Shore Chamber of Commerce, the recognition dinner is among the most prestigious occasions for celebration of scholastic excellence in the area.
“The North Shore Chamber of Commerce believes that the foundation of good business is good education, and that recognizing those who excel provides incentive for young people to work to their highest potential,” said a Chamber press release.
Fifty years ago, Thomas Tanous, president of the Beverly Teachers Association, met with Chamber of Commerce education chair Jack Good about an idea to honor high academic achievers from Beverly High School.
The Chamber endorsed the concept and the first Honors Scholars Recognition Dinner was held at Beverly High School in 1968. Within three years, students representing high schools in Hamilton-Wenham, Manchester and Masconomet were invited to participate. The dinner has since expanded greatly.
To date, more than 15,000 top scholars, many of whom make up the North Shore’s business community, have been honored at the recognition dinner. The dinner’s lead sponsors include Eastern Bank and EBSCO Information Services.
