SAUGUS — The driver of an SUV that struck a bus on Essex Street Sunday afternoon died from her injuries, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Transit Police stated Monday.

“Kathleen Callahan, 47, of Saugus has been pronounced deceased as a result of injuries sustained in yesterday’s accident,” police said in a statement.

Callahan was driving a Ford SUV Sunday at approximately 3:50 p.m. when it crossed the traffic dividing line in the vicinity of 190 Essex St. near Felton Street and struck the front of an oncoming MBTA bus. The driver an four passengers on the Lynn-bound bus were taken to area hospitals for treatment of minor injuries.

Transit Police stated Callahan “…possibly struck a 3rd parked vehicle causing the Ford to veer into the MBTA’s bus lane of travel striking it head on.” The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
